Scarborough: Sean Spicer Like an 'Old Soviet Propagandist'

by Jon Levine | 7:45 am, July 18th, 2017

Yesterday journalists got to see Sean Spicer at the (not) daily White House press briefing. The perennially embattled press secretary and occasional White House Easter Bunny has been largely replaced by his deputy, Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

The briefing was off-camera, but audio released revealed Spicer was behind the times, quoting outdated talking points (AKA lies) about the original motivation for that infamous meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer … and a Russia lobbyist, and a clown car of other random people who just happened to be there.

“I’m glad that the topics to Russia because it actually reminds me. Sean Spicer yesterday … you’ll remember what we used to hear from the old Soviet Union spokespeople. They would come out and say things that had already been disproven, that the whole world knew had been disproven. And when Sean Spicer comes out yesterday and say it’s just about adoptions, that lie, which the president signed off on on Air Force One, was proven to be a falsehood over a week ago.”

Scarborough then returned to his Soviet analogy.

“Like an old Soviet Propagandist, you have White House people going out and actually quoting something that was proven to be a falsehood eight, nine, ten days ago.”

‘Quite the Failure’: Mika and Joe Crow as Obamacare Repeal Dies

by Jon Levine | 7:04 am, July 18th, 2017

Maybe you didn’t read it here first, but only Mediaite can bring you the real time reactions of the bloviators and punditocracy.

First among equals, that irrepressible pair at MSNBC, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski. The two adopted a serious visage as they issued a eulogy for the GOP’s seven year quest to repeal Obamacare. But of course, the self-satisfaction was self-evident.

“The president said and I’ll quote his words here, ‘you’re going to have such great health care at a tiny fraction of the cost and it’s going to be so easy.’ That was October 2016,” said Brzezinski.

“The greatest risk to the Republican majority, may not be the Russian scandals, may not be the indiscriminate tweeting, may not be the unpresidential behavior, it may not be the questioning of checks and balances, it may not be throwing aside every sacred tradition of the United States government over the past 240 years, it may be the inability to get things done,” added a trollish Scarborough.

Though forecasting the repeal’s demise was hardly a feat of clairvoyance, the pair marinated in victory.

Spicer had to know what he was saying was proven wrong several days ago.

Is he out to lunch too or just trying his hardest to get his job back by faithfully mouthing his marching orders?

A lot of what we are seeing now is a rehash of what we saw in the early days of this administration. They are bold, brash and unapologetic in their lies. It got them in trouble then and showed that they would say anything except the truth. So since it worked so well then, I guess they thought they'd trot it out again.

I do see a difference now in that there is often immediate pushback. Six months ago the lies came tumbling out with little or no immediate confrontation. It is getting harder and harder for them to spread the lies and misinformation without having to explain and repeat their main talking points. Often reduced to stuttering or stammering, it does my heart good when program hosts force them to defend the lies. Their unchecked blathering is no longer a given. Hallelujah!
