He got out of bed, lit up a cigarette, poured himself a glass of bourbon, took a sip, and said ... "It's gotta suck being Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan right about now"

(6,551 posts)Boehner left at the right time. Met the Pope, called it a career, and left to enjoy a far better and certainly less stressful life.
Wonder if anyone has asked for his opinion of Trump.

(4,103 posts)I seldom agree with Boehner's politics, but I don't see the man dropping to his knees to worship Putin the way Trump's Republican party is now.

(26,236 posts)I still have no respect for the man as he is among those that helped lead them down this path.

(15,220 posts)I remember the day he met the Pope and you could see it in his eyes - even through the tears. In fact some of us here on DU discussed it even before he made the statement about resignation. He was personally affected by His Holiness because Boehner realized that what he (Boehner) was doing was going against everything that his faith had taught him and that his faith actually stood for.
If I remember right, he resigned the next day.

(16,423 posts)In an interview in January(!) 2017, he warned in an interview that the Republicans should not get too cocky with their promise of healthcare-repeal.
He warned that the Republicans have many factions with many ideas what healthcare should be like, but that no GOP-faction is willing to compromise with the others.
He warned that there would never be the one big healthcare-bill the whole GOP would rally around, because "perfect becomes the enemy of good".
