In every case, it was either about something he's said, about his political stances, his presidential campaign and the fact that that campaign inflicted Caribou Barbie onto the body politic.
But, in spite of that, I had always respected his military service and the fact that he once tried, though unsuccessfully, to carry on the legacy of Barry Goldwater in the US Senate.
Like some of you as well, with your friends and family, I've also personally seen what brain cancer can do to someone. It's some seriously nasty shit that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
It's times like this where politics has no place.
I wish him a speedy recovery and my best wishes goes out to his family.

(115,674 posts)I never loathed the guy the way I loathe Trump. I often couldn't figure him out, and I'll never understand why on earth he chose Blunder Woman as his running mate. But I'm genuinely sorry to hear this diagnosis.

(45,806 posts)mostly because he appeared to love war. He did stick to his beliefs though and would fight anyone without regard to party, gender, age, or position. My respect, sympathy and prayers re with him.

AND I have friends and family who have died of cancer. It sucks. I don't really feel much of anything for him right now though I do sympathize with his family and hope he is not in pain.
Too bad any lesson learned won't matter since it doesn't sound like he'll be able to return to the senate.

(11,175 posts)As a cancer survivor myself, I've been angry to see how many people here gleefully jump all over a report of cancer afflicting the likes of Robert Novak or Tony Snow. This time, there's still some of that, but much less than in those other cases.
A right-winger getting cancer is not an instance of karma, any more than it is when the patient is Ted Kennedy or Elizabeth Edwards. I hold with Gilda Radner: We're all members of the club.

I've been paying attention to John McCain longer than many here (I suspect). I also lived in Phoenix when he hypocritically moved from the low-rent part of the city he needed to be in as a Congressman to the much better part of the town he could live in as a Senator, some months before running for Senate. Again, can I bring up the word hypocrisy?
I also know that he abandoned his first wife, lied to the woman who became his second wife, and probably lied about his POW experiences. In short, as far as I'm concerned, John McCain (Oh, and should I mention the airplanes he crashed?) is not only NOT a war hero, but is at his fundamental a hypocrite and a liar, and remind me again why I should respect him?
I don't wish him ill, but I'm very cognizant of his past.

(4,940 posts)But that's a whole 'nuther story told closely by politicos here in the state. She was foist on him for the big $$ from oil companies here. And she failed again, which I love.
Mr. McCain, speedy and fully recovery - you have prayers coming from way up here.

(14,274 posts)I disagree with his policy positions and his voting record. But he is still a human being with a devoted family and I wish him well. No one should have to suffer through what he is experiencing.
