Why does Trump continue to give LONG interviews to "unfriendly" newspapers like the NYT?

First, the New York Times and Washington Post have dome amazing journalism since Trump has taken over. Every major Russia story I can think of has broken in either the NYT, WP, or WSJ.

That said, I just don't understand why Trump continues to give these really long, news making interviews to the NYT? What is his motivation to do it? Why wouldn't you just go on Fox News, etc?

It just doesn't make any sense to me. Any thoughts:

It just seems more likely to make people really mad and want you out..

That said, I do think the answer is really easy. He is incompetent.

Strategy, common sense, everything, it seems, goes out the window when his ego gets needy.

Trump has never been accepted by the old money/true elites of NYC society and the NYT is among that group. He is desperate for their approval and he loves the media no matter what he says otherwise.

He thinks if he talks long enough that everyone will suddenly realize how smart he really is. More proof he's a moron.

his crazy theories properly, and school the press, and they would change from "fake" to favorable, He simply won't understand that they can never be anything but objective, This is automatically impossible for the narcissist, because his belief systems are unshakeable and wrong.
