Across the Trump-fanatic clickservative media, the weeks theme was Why wont Republicans follow Donald Trump over the cliff?

As Trump dragged Senators to the White House for a North Korean-style rant, threatened Dean Heller to his face and proceeded to take four different positions on where to go next, Republicans took all the political damage a repeal vote would have incurred with the dubious benefit of having Trump lecture them in the Oval Office on how badly they sold their plan. The few who clung to the idea that the president was about to show some actual leadership on the bill didnt anticipate Trump giving an interview that wouldonce againknock the news cycle into orbit.
Jeff Flake, Dean Heller, and Jeff Sessions all had to learn painful lessons on the cost of being on the Trump Train this week. For Flake, Heller and a few other Republicans, setting themselves on fire for a vote on Obamacare repeal was political poison. Their legitimate fear of their constituents was greaterfinallythan their fear of Trump. Winning over Trump voters is no longer a sane response to the insanity of your political situation. Many Republican elected still arent getting this because they think they can make it work. They stare at Trumps base-approval numbers, torn between fear and temptation.
To remind my Republican friends for the hundredth time, the Trump base isnt your base. His supporters hate you as much as Trump hates you. Trump devotees dont care about shrinking the size and scope of government. They dont care about the Constitution. Theyre not Republicans, except as a flag of convenience. If you havent noticed the theme from Fox to Rush and across the rest of the Trump-fanatic clickservative media isnt My God, this bill was political death for anyone who voted for it. Instead, it was Why wont Republicans follow Donald Trump over the cliff? What good is a majority if it wont destroy itself in a vote that 70 percent of the population hates?
So, to my Republican elected friends, there are a lot of reasons that GOP Trumpism wont work, but the biggest one is this: Donald Trump hates you. You are, at best, props and extras in The Apprentice: 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. No matter how many times you abase yourself before him, no matter how much you grovel, it will never be enough. The moment you do anything to preserve your own political fortunes, he will turn on you. The moment you deviate from constant service to his colossal ego, youre going to end up on blast. He has no allies. Only fluffers and foes.

In case you're wondering: a fluffer is defined as:
Where's my fucking fluffer, goddammit!

(45,991 posts)He is an opportunist.
He has no political bearing whatsoever.
Cosmocat
(14,557 posts)He is the VERY embodiment of the republican party.
There is a reason he won the nomination with more votes than anyone R in history during the primary, a reason most of the Rs in congress gleefully bend a knee to him.
He IS what they have been winking and whistling at for decades now.
Wilson is, as most R pundits, is being disingenuous. Trying to keep the sainted GOP up on its pedestal, but putting the GOP on that pedestal is how we got 45.
They always sing this song when they get the power they do desparately fight for - disown the disaster.
See, W was not a REAL conservative.

(48,922 posts)They have to pay in 2018 and 2020 and beyond for endorsing him. They chose him, over 16 of their best, to represent the RepubliCON party. (They have a shallow team.)
Plus McCONnell is deep into Trump-Russia (denied Merrick Garland vote, blocked telling state election commissions about the hacks, etc.).

(16,423 posts)He forces the House to take a healthcare-vote they don't want to take.
He's trying to bully the Senate into passing a healthcare-bill, ANY healthcare-bill, and he doesn't care what's even in it.
He keeps lying and Spicey then has to lie and cover for his lies.
McMaster tries to help Trump by lying and Trump throws him under the bus by telling the truth.
Obamacare, the wall, jobs... None of this matters to Trump. He doesn't care WHAT policies his administration passes, just as long as he can claim them as his personal victories.
Does it make the GOP look bad? He doesn't care.
Will the GOP take a beating in 2018? He doesn't care.
I have said it so many times, and I will say it again: If I were Paul Ryan, I would be mortally afraid how easy it was for an outsider like Trump to just hijack the republican base and rile them up against the republican establishment.
Cosmocat
(14,557 posts)You think Ryan is a victim, you think he was "forced" to take a vote?
Lawrence O'Donnell played a bit with him on air two days ago, pathetically pleading for the the senate to "just pass something, so we can get it worked out ..."
Hell, he, McConnell and most of the Rs in congress want to destroy our health care and SS so desperately they can't hide their excitement.
You are right about 45, but the Rs are not victims or dupes here. Sure, the would rather have had someone like Cruz who was not 24-7 chaos and was smooth and said things in their sly little wink and nod ways, but they are 100% behind 45 because he is sick enough to enable what THEY WANT.

(4,558 posts)They only have 2 choices now.. own him, or leave the party.
He didn't run as an independent, he ran as a Republican.
He won their primary.
He won the electoral college as their candidate of choice.
I will never accept anything less than him being the face of their party.
I know the author of the article means well in pointing out that he isn't the embodiment of their party platform or morals, but I will always speak out against anyone on our side that tries to give them an "out".. even if it isn't their goal to do so.
Don't give them deniability.. make them own it. If it sucks to own it THEY need to make the change.
