WASHINGTON Lawyers for Donald Trump, spurred by the presidents own inquiries, are exploring his power to grant pardons to aides, family and himself as a means of undermining special counsel Robert Muellers investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, The Washington Post reports.
The Post, citing an unnamed source familiar with the queries, said the president himself had asked advisers about the constitutional power, although another source noted that Trump sought only to further his understanding of the privilege. Trumps lawyer John Dowd called the claims nonsense.
Trumps lawyers are also looking into Muellers potential conflicts of interests, perhaps as a way of removing him from the Justice Departments investigation, according to a Post article that cited several of Trumps legal advisers.
Also on Thursday, various outlets reported Trumps longtime personal attorney and lead counsel on the Russia investigation, Marc Kasowitz, would be stepping into a smaller role. Kasowitz made headlines last week after he threatened a stranger in a string of profane emails, saying things like watch your back, bitch, and Im on you.

(3,781 posts)I read today that Nixon asked if he could pardon himself and was given a resounding No. Also, Preet Bharara tweeted something interesting today, that if Trump fires Mueller, it doesn't stop an independent U.S. Attorney somewhere from continuing some or all of the Office of Special Counsel's investigation. I don't think he's going to be able to wriggle off the hook on this one. He's pissed off too many people for them to just drop it.
The problem is going to be that he will pardon his entire family while he's still President, and then after he leaves office, whoever ends up being President (because I believe Pence will go down with him) will then pardon him.

(11,832 posts)That is coming. So, even if he does attempt to pardon himself for any wrongdoing while holding federal office, he cannot escape the law in the State of NY.
That money laundering case is coming to his doorstep one way or another and soon.
I suspect that if he is advised that he cannot pardon himself as Pres., he will exact a pardon pledge from Pence and then resign.
Still...NY State charges... tick...tick...tickkkk

(1,009 posts)He may be able to pardon *other people* for federal crimes, but there's still state crimes under the jurisdiction of NYAG, and we know how many of them are from NY, or caught up in probable money laundering in NY.
Giuliani was possibly holding the bag on that one...and notice how quiet he's been lately?
And I believe anyone that is pardoned can no longer plead the 5th.

(13,218 posts)I believe the rule is you have to show contrition for your crime to be pardoned. I.e, you have to confess guilt.
