I've always contended that the Republicans want to end social safety net programs because they long for a return of the twenty five cent shoe shine.
During the golden era of money, only those who have arrived ate steak dinners and the teeming masses fought for the opportunity to provide degrading services to the monied class. You can bet your apple cart that conservatives wish a return to the heady days wistfully described by their grandfathers.
