and inventing interesting countries with lots of maps. The very idea of singing in public would have caused me to die instantly of prospective stage fright.

I had a good voice when I was nine (and still do), but had, and still have, the stage presence of a small, frightened rodent. I am amazed at kids who have enough confidence to perform like that.

Telling little boys who were holding up a single finger and saying "Sit on my finger" that they could sit on mine instead. Teacher caught me saying it back to a boy named Dexter and she told my mother. My mother laughed. Told me to keep standing up against such things.

Yes, it was a thing for little boys to do that in my school at the time.

Opting out of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Refusing to be shamed by my 3rd grade teacher who was big on shaming kids into her idea of acceptable behavior.

But nothing as cool as that little girl.

and everything thing else needed. She was already singing at weddings, bar mitzvahs and store openings. I was sure she had a wonderful career ahead of her. But I never heard of her again. Marie G. from the Bronx, elementary school class of '55, where are you?

Had one of those orange safety flags on a six foot fiberglass pole and one of those handlebar grips that made a motorcycle noise when you revved it. There might even have been some playing cards hitting the spokes. I tell ya, I was beyond cool.

All the other guys were at the 'girls=ick!' stage. I had them all to myself.

I was torn between good girl Sandra Hicks, and bad girl Sheri Rizzo.

in school we had little newspapers that had simple to read articles on current events. LOVED all of the China coverage.

I certainly wasn't singing with golden buzzer confetti.
