"You have no right to food, housing, health care !"

I confess;
I made the mistake of tuning in for 5 minutes to Pat Robertson's "700 Club",
and heard:

"You have no right to food, housing, health care ! You need to go out and work for it."

I changed channels before finding out what Bible verse he might have been referring to.

It seems obvious, I know, but just once, one time, I want to see a poor-as-dirt person being asked on national television if they think bacteria and cancer should have a right to their body if they can not afford to pay for treatment.

because religious brainwashing has told them that they are being punished for their sins and they didn't love "jeebus" enough.

Or that God is such a stingy, miserly old coot that He would begrudge His children sustenance, shelter, and safety?

For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,
Isaiah 58:10 ESV / 568 helpful votes

If you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.
James 2:14-18 ESV / 423 helpful votes

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

Whoever gives to the poor will not want, but he who hides his eyes will get many a curse.

And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”

But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.
Proverbs 14:31 ESV / 175 helpful votes

Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.

Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.'

Did he screen everybody to be sure he was giving the food only to people who had jobs?
