Supposed to be the Democrats are taking them!

The media sensors what they show us as well. We are manipulated to believing and feeling a certain way. It is only through reading from different sources that you find out what is really going on.

We are becoming a police state to be able to control us as things vet progressively worse. OWS woke them up. They are ready to stop our protests when they want.

Until we get the money out of our politics (yea right) we will continue the slide.

Wish we could wake up enough to have a huge march on Washington for Publicly Funded Elections and then keep up the fight after. The root cause of this is our campaign (bribe) finance system!

This would not be happening in a true Representative Democracy!

We went to an ACLU lawyer when our High School principal threatened to expel me and 3 friends (or comrades as we called each other) at the end of our Senior year for handing out anti-Vietnam War flyers on school grounds. While we knew it was an empty threat, expulsion would have meant 1- no diploma, therefore 2- no college, and then 3- a draft notice within a few weeks.
The ACLU lawyer told us not to speak to the principal again, but we could glare at him if we wanted. She wrote a letter, and a week later he called us into his office and, while none of us said a word, told us we would not be expelled and offered a grudging apology for "perhaps speaking in anger because, you know, I just love this country."
They will get my dues every year, and a small check from my will.

Unfortunately 1st Amendment threads can be sort of depressing around here.

Some more authoritarian-minded people seem to forget that the same 1st Amendment that protects anti-war protests also protects sex scenes on HBO and "blasphemous" cartoons.

I disagreed recently with their interpretation of the BDS law sponsored by Wyden, etc. b/c I don't think the legislation will do what they're claiming it will, however I still support the org. wholeheartedly.

is a lot of time passes and a lot of damage is done while these cases work their way through the court system. It's rare you can get the stay until the case of heard.
But I have little doubt even the right-leaning SCOTUS would let this crap stand.

It doesn't matter what the people want. It doesn't matter what the President does. It doesn't matter that Trump is absolutely shredding the Constitution. They have theirs and that's all that matters to them.

39. Totalitarianism
Tue Jul 25, 2017, 06:18 PM
Jul 2017

Totalitarianism is a political system in which the state recognizes no limits to its authority and strives to regulate every aspect of public and private life wherever feasible.[1] A distinctive feature of totalitarian governments is an "elaborate ideology, a set of ideas that gives meaning and direction to the whole society".[2]

The concept was first developed in the 1920s by the Weimar German jurist, and later Nazi academic, Carl Schmitt, and Italian fascists. Schmitt used the term, Totalstaat, in his influential work on the legal basis of an all-powerful state, The Concept of the Political (1927).[3] The concept became prominent in Western political discourse as a concept that highlights similarities between Fascist states and the Soviet Union.[4][5][6][7][8
