Joseph P. Kennedy: Fight Trump, but focus on issues important to voters

Democrats need to focus on close-to-home issues that paved President Trump’s path to the White House in order to turn around their party’s series of demoralizing losses at the ballot box, U.S. Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy III told the Herald.

Kennedy — while insisting that Democrats also have to stand up to Trump’s attacks on values “that people hold dear” — told the Herald yesterday that candidates hoping to win over voters can’t ignore the way Trump’s message resonated with many.

“You have to recognize that he was elected because there is a large portion of our country that felt, that believes, our system of government is not working for them,” Kennedy said, “and that means addressing those concerns that aren’t necessarily on the front pages of newspaper everyday, but they are the thoughts that probably confront those people when they wake up in the morning.”

He said Massachusetts residents want action on high housing costs, energy costs, the ballooning price of a college education and the commuter rail system that needs work.

“None of those are Donald Trump’s fault. None of them,” Kennedy said. “They existed long before Donald Trump came into office.”
Kennedy hopes the party can get to work on those issues that might win back Democrats who flirted in 2016 with Trump’s promise for change in Washington, D.C.

Trump promised a lot but his actions in office are not the populist message he promised. Not that I believed him but obviously his bullshit resonated with enough people.

'There is a large portion of our country that felt, that believes, our system of government is not working for them,” Kennedy said, “and that means addressing those concerns that aren’t necessarily on the front pages of newspaper everyday, but they are the thoughts that probably confront those people when they wake up in the morning.”'

There are other posts here expressing similar thoughts, but unfortunately resulting in 'circular firing squad.'
