Obama’s Beautiful Essay About The White House Puts Trump’s Dump Comment To Shame

By Jason Easley on Tue, Aug 1st, 2017 at 10:36 pm

In 2013, then President Obama wrote a beautiful essay about Lincoln, the White House, and the Gettysburg Address. Reading Obama’s words today reminds everyone that the same piece of living history that previous presidents were in awe of is the same place that classless Trump called a dump.

When talking to members at his Bedminster golf club, Trump explained that he golfs every weekend because the White House is a dump.

As an example of how a president should treat the White House, here is Barack Obama’s handwritten essay on the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address:

In the evening, when Michelle and the girls have gone to bed, I sometimes walk down the hall to a room Abraham Lincoln used as his office. It contains an original copy of the Gettysburg address, written in Lincoln’s own hand.

I linger on these few words that have helped define our American experiment: “A new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.”

Through the lines of weariness etched in his face, we know Lincoln grasped, perhaps more than anyone, the burdens required to give these words meaning. He knew that even a self-evident truth was not self-executing; that blood drawn by the lash was an affront to our ideals; that blood drawn by the sword was in painful service to those same ideals.

He understood as well that our humble efforts, our individual ambitions, are ultimately not what matter; rather, it is through the accumulated toil and sacrifice of ordinary men and women – those like the soldiers who consecrated that battlefield – that this country is built, and freedom preserved. This quintessentially self-made man, fierce in his belief in honest work and the striving spirit at the heart of America, believed that it falls to each generation, collectively, to share in that toil and sacrifice.

Through cold war and world war, through industrial revolutions and technological transformations, through movements for civil rights and women’s rights and workers’ rights and gay rights, we have. At times, social and economic change have strained our union. But Lincoln’s words give us confidence that whatever trials await us, this nation and the freedom we cherish can, and shall, prevail.

Living in the White House is an honor and a responsibility. Trump has already neglected the responsibilities of his office, but he is a man who is so shallow and entitled that he can’t see and appreciate the history of the place that he is occupying.

Donald Trump wants so badly to be Barack Obama, but he will never measure up to his predecessor. Obama and others before him conducted themselves as a president should, and Trump will always be the reality television star who was sent into the West Wing from Russia with love.

....destroy anything good about Obama and all he achieved. Trump clearly is trying to destroy not just Obamacare, but any civil rights, environmental and diplomatic policy that Obama did. He hopes to leave anything associated with Obama in chaos and shattered. But the reality is that he is not going to be able to do that to the memory of who Obama is. And Trump will never achieve the popularity amongst the US, nations and in intellect and achievements that will be remembered positively.

The only reason the White House could be called a dump right now is because of the garbage that is in it right now. I just look forward to the day it's clean again.

He's an entitled, sick little man-child who wants to be loved the way Obama was (is) loved but doesn't want to have to work at it, behave appropriately, actually learn what it takes to do the job, care about anyone but himself, have some impulse control or do a single thing that would earn the love and respect of the American people. He just thinks adoration and adulation is his birthright, and it incenses him to learn that it's not. So rather than change his ways, he wants to destroy the legacy of the man who is so loved and respected around the world, like a petulant child knocking down a tower of blocks made by a playmate rather than building one himself.

that survived the Civil War, even as his racist beliefs and political ties to cutthroat capitalism,
railroads, and northern businessmen, as well as mismanagement of the war went unnoticed or
were erased in the nation's admiration for him in the decades following his assassination.

Historians continue to examine the long record of his political life, in papers, speeches, policies,
and the records of his life kept by political contemporaries who interacted with him. Like any
man, it's a mixed bag for sure, but 150 years of eulogizing his achievements has been quite a
distortion. Does Obama cling to Lincoln as a fellow Illinoisan?

it feels like a slap in the face to read Twitler's lame ass tweets and his "BEEYOOTIFUL" this and "INCREDIBLE" that. He's like a lazy child who didn't study for the big test so now he's got to bullshit his way through the answers. It's beyond pathetic. To see how far down into the gutter that orange shithead has dragged our country right alongside him alternately breaks my heart and infuriates me.

Everything he touches turns to shit. I shudder to think what the East Wing looks like now. I wonder if he's installed gold plated crappers so he can pretend he's on a Golden Throne when he tweets his early morning bullshit, delusions, and lies.

Now that he is old and his face is fleshy it is easy to see the spoiled toddler he was--understanding very early that he could get away with everything and that the people who worked for his parents were frightened of him because he held their livelihood in his fat little hands.

The magnificence of President Obama. The eloquence of President Obama. The heart, compassion, and conscience of President Obama. HIS White House was no dump. Maybe it is now, considering the occupant.

But take the trump out of the White House and it becomes once again, the place of historical wonder and power and reverence that it's always been (even if he was too stupid and pig-headed to realize it).

Let's take the trump OUT of the White House. The sooner the better (even if it means Mike Pence. He'll just be a temporary zit to be popped at the next opportunity. We can dispense with him in 2020).
