now I'm not as sure.

With his being a retired career military general, where keeping order and protecting America is normally deeply ingrained IME, it may be that working with Mathis he may hope that they'll be able to protect America from the worst that could happen with Trump & Cabal driving the Crazy Town bus off of a cliff.

but stuck around and took this job, my hopes were raised that Mattis and he are cooperating to control the madness. It sure seems a possibility at this point. I have a healthy distrust of career military in the civilian government, but I am an optimist too.

About most career military when they become civilians but one thing I will say in their favor is that they're normally fairly good at organizing and instilling some sort of discipline.

I think the major problem that Mathis and Kelly are going to run into is a) these aren't military troops that will always snap to and follow orders and b) the biggest cause of the chaos and strife isn't the staff, it's the 'boss' who deliberately creates and encourages chaos, competition and backstabbing as part of his basic (micro)management style. There's only just so much they can do to try and control the narcissistic, outspoken, bullying (and possibly dementia challenged) jerk that Trump is down into his bones.
