The GOP's shrinking base of support really has no chance in a general election unless the ticket is deliberately designed to have broad appeal. Hell, they're going to lose a million voters between now and election day just to lack of health care--and those will be more likely to be the racist, chauvinist AM-dial brownshirts that Kept Merka Graete since 1980.

Bachmann at least has the same life-insurance appeal that Dan Quayle had in 1988. But yes, it turns out that running a vapid histrionic doesn't increase turnout in the numbers one needs to get close enough to steal it. So the smart money will be against her... but she's still got the stupid money, the evil money, the crazy money, and the illegal money, so she's not out of it by any stretch.

Honestly, I think Ron Paul is going to get the second slot no matter what simply because he threatens now to be more powerful as a third-party candidate than he has ever been before--and will draw his votes disproportionately from the Republican side. One way or another, Paul has to be put on ice....

But don't count out teh crazy.

Picking Bachman would be the greatest possible sop to the tea party short of picking Grover Norquist.

They are sexist but love Palin. They are racist but loved Cain.

There is no inconsistancy in that.

I was convinced that it was going to be Mittens/Rubio until recently.

White Guy/White Guy vs Obama/Biden.

Romney is not likely to run with a nut job or a moron....funny how McCain managed to find both in a single package.

a Romney/Christie ticket. Christie has those same kind of "attack-dog" qualities that right-wingers like and he has been vociferous in his support of Romney (and savage in his attacks on Obama) ever since he dismissed talk of running. Plus it preps him up for 2016 (if Romney loses) without leaving him with all of the baggage of a failed Presidential run. The only question about such a pairing is if the teabaggers would be satisfied b/c neither one of them have extremely conservative credentials though given the prominence of the economy as in issue in 2012, the teabaggers know that Christie has been tough on teachers unions and labor and they like that sort of crap.

but the Republican Tea Party, as we know, isn't very smart or saavy when it comes to strategy. They just want excitement and somebody who will bash Democrats and "the left" with everything they've got. Christie fits that bill IMHO. In terms of sheer nastiness, he is only outdone by Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich IMHO. As for Republican Tea Party logic and strategy, I offer you up the following exhibits as evidence:

A.) Sarah Palin- they considered her a credible candidate for VPOTUS, considered her a viable candidate for POTUS, adored her even long after she and McCain bombed in 2008- and built a "movement" around her as well that, unfortunately, endures to this day.
B.) Herman Cain- While I thought that it was unlikely he would ever actually win the GOP nomination, he was top of the "not Romney" GOP charts for several weeks and he was considered by many as a "credible" candidate for POTUS despite never having held elective office, knew almost nothing about foreign policy, had bizarre anti-Muslim views, and had an insane tax plan.

given all the success he can present to the Tea Party in tearing WI apart by going after the unions and 99%. Most people hate what he has done but the Tea Party will eat it up.

And many in NJ want to see the bum thrown OUT in 2013 (there are about 5 potential candidates, look for a frontrunner to emerge after November).
