Surprise! 6-year-old Nebraska girl grows 19-foot sunflower to cheer up mom

Six-year-old Laurali Polacek points to the 19-foot sunflower she planted in the backyard of her family's home in Wisner, Nebraska. The flower is a little droopy from recent winds.

A little Nebraska girl has grown a really big sunflower.

Six-year-old Laurali Polacek planted sunflower seeds last fall in her backyard in Wisner.

One of the sunflowers has grown to 19 feet, a size that Nebraska Extension says is definitely taller than the norm. Typically sunflowers grow 10 to 12 feet.

The flower also surpassed the 15-footer a Ralston couple had in their backyard two years ago.

I just finished staking my sunflowers up, because the wind keeps pushing them over, but I don't think any of them are over 8 feet tall. And I was impressed by that!!

but birds plant them for us each fall. This makes for volunteer sunflowers all over our 2 acres every Spring. We've got a couple of patches of them that are 12ft tall.

I haven't had any get that tall. Mine are getting ready to bloom, I love them.
