Jeff Sessions hints Department of Justice could force media to give up sources
More subpoenas could force journalists to give up anonymous sources or face jail time to protect them
Clark Mindock New York @ClarkMindock 3 hours ago

Attorney General Jeff Sessions says that the Department of Justice (DoJ) is reviewing policies for subpoenaing reporters during investigations of federal intelligence leaks, an indicator that the US government may consider more aggressive tactics to try and force journalists to identify their sources.

"One of the things we are doing is reviewing the policies affecting media subpoenas," Mr Sessions said, announcing his administration's crackdown on leaks during a press conference. "We respect the important role that the press plays, and we will give our support. But, it is not unlimited. They cannot place lives at risk with impunity."

We already plunged to 47th on Reporters without Borders free press rankings in 2014, mostly because of attempts to clamp down on whistleblowers. Where will we fall after this upcoming assault?

The assault on the press is escalating. A much as I hated Judith Miller and her gullibility in accepting Scooter and the like as her "sources" in the run up to Iraq, I regard the right to keep sources secret important to "real" journalism.

Thus far, the publications like the Times, Post, WSJ and even main networks have been very scrupulous in finding many sources before they publish. And when not the case, they have acted, such as CNN did.

I think the leaks have been coming mainly from the Intelligence agencies, delivering strategic payback for Trump dissing them, especially in that horrific narcissistic display at the CIA right after Inauguration.
