Malcolm Nance on Trump
I really like Malcolm Nance. I've respected him since the first time I heard him speak. But the more I listen to him, the more I like him, which is different though often overlapping than respecting someone.
It's interesting: there have been a few discussions about purity on DU:GD in recent days. Hopefully, you haven't seen them, and I don't think they are worth looking for if you haven't. But, for those of you who have unfortunately suffered through them, let me make clear I'm not a purist. I certainly haven't lived the purest life
..committed many impure acts, have impure thoughts, and generally have enjoyed them all.
In no sense do I agree with Mr. Nance on every issue. In fact, I disagree with him on some very important ones, primarily related to the environment and environmentalists. I have no idea how pure he has been in his adult life, though I speculate his career has included experiences few of us can imagine. Yet he is a purist, in the sense of his understanding of intelligence. This in no way keeps me from both liking and respecting him. And really, really appreciating the role he is playing in our society today.
This evening, I was watching some films of his recent interviews with non-mainstream media. Unlike Mark Felt, who inhabited the shadows, Mr. Nance is very open to the public. I've been thinking about interviewing him for DU.
Tonight, among other things, after noting that Trump hasn't got a clue about what he's facing, Mr. Nance noted that Trump is exactly the type of would-be king the Founding Fathers worked to prevent from accessing power. Thus, he said, Trump is up against the democratic traditions that have been in place since 1783.
He noted that up until now, the public has only heard intelligence, and not evidence. But Mr. Mueller is now working with a talented team, to transform intelligence into evidence for criminal trials. He said that evidence will result in criminal convictions for espionage and RICO violations for a number of people in the White House.
Asked how much longer Trump will be president, he said, Ten to twelve months
.unless he tries to fire Mueller. If he tries that, six months.
Peace,

(73,535 posts)He'll likely say that he wants to spend more time with Ivanka, since Jared will either be incarcerated or on the underground in Russia.
I think we'll see two cycles that will be telling. The first involves the leaks about the investigation (possibly some regarding the grand jury); the second, being Trump rebelling against General Kelly and his lawyers' recommendations. Each cycle will feed the other, creating the synergy needed to remove him from office.

have involved our pResident.
I, too, have purely unpure thoughts when it comes to him and his ilk.

It made me laugh when Malcolm said he used to be a Con but is now a flaming liberal. I hadn't heard his timeline before, very encouraging.
So that leaves Pence who would also do his best to destroy our country in the most Dominionist of ways. My thought about him is that he will be caught up and have to go to...or...after what the country will have gone through he better not and will not try to carry out the Koch/Alec agenda. What do you think?
the last 18 months have increased the rate of Mr. Nance's changes. (I, of course, have merely become much older and more feeble in that same time period.)
My concern with the albino worm is that DC will act as if he is the second coming of Gerald Ford (the first was bad enough). That Congress will pretend that he can "bring the country together."
My hope is that his role is exposed. His hands are not clean.
Me.
(35,454 posts)somewhere today, didn't read, that asked if he was ready to be Gerald Ford. He's got to go...maybe...I thought today 45 will get word that Pence is setting up a run for '20 so maybe 45's penchant for revenge will take hold and he'll either boot him soon or as 45 walks out the door he'll reveal a nasty bit about Pence.

(73,535 posts)terribly obnoxious asshole everyone despised in high school. The one who, once he knew he was caught doing something wrong, immediately began pointing fingers at his few friends, and tattling on them. And I'm serious about that -- it is at the essence of his being.

This is going to be messy, dirty, and exhausting for the nation. When it's over, the danger of sitting back, putting our feet up, and breathing a sigh of relief will be tempting, and well deserved. But that's exactly when we've got to keep our guard up, because that's exactly when all kinds of nasty stuff will be done under the mantle of unity. But I also think that the investigations will show that Pence is dirty, too, so hopefully we can get rid of both of them. Next in line would be Ryan, and he'd be too scared by then to do anything.
I also think the real winner in all this mess is going to be our system. We will be able to show the world it works. It's frustratingly slow, but it will work for us.
H2O Man
(73,535 posts)elections in 2018 and 2020 essential. And I agree that the system, slow and frustrating as it is, can work for us .....if we work with it. It's past time to put minor differences behind us, and to create a united front.
WinstonSmith4740
(3,056 posts)A unified front is absolutely necessary. Which is exactly why the trolls & bots are planting seeds of discord when it comes to some of the rising Democratic stars. "Inherit the Wind" was just on, and this line jumped out at me "Whoever brings ruin on their family will inherit the wind..." It's, of course, Proverbs 11:29. We as Democrats better remember that. Even with all the Russian meddling and back-biting last year, Hillary STILL pulled 3 million more votes. Imagine what she could have done without all the distractions.

(3,205 posts)...I think everybody that had anything to do with Trump's campaign is going to get splattered in the shitstorm. This will hopefully propel the Dems into partial control of the congress in '18 which will go a long way in limiting the damage that Pence can do. I don't think he'll have much of a chance in 2020.
Watergate - and this is much more serious than Watergate - gave the Dems the most liberal congress since FDR's administration.

(7,605 posts)Unfortunately, I see him as someone who will destroy democratic institutions through sheer animal instinct. I fear that he will prepare the country for a much more focused, ruthless and capable monarchy or oligarchy.
As for Trump, he has benefited from extraordinary good fortune which he has received without understanding, appreciation or gratitude.
H2O Man
(73,535 posts)I think Mr. Nance was referring to Trump's believing himself to be king, and his family to be royalty. The fact that his daughter and her husband are now in the White House seems to support that -- neither have any background, or talents, for that matter.
I agree 100% with you that his presidency has put our constitutional democracy at high risk. It seems that Bannon has spoken openly about wanting to destroy it.

the destruction he leaves will depend a lot on us continuing to give those talk radio gods a free speech free ride

Thank you for sharing his words here, Waterman. Pence worries me as well, but I'm holding out hope he's tainted just enough to be viewed as a damaged placeholder. A necessity in the interim, but just there to hold the spot for the next legitimately elected person.

(15,596 posts)Big part of the spy game is reading bullshit all day & night,
so it's impossible to avoid getting some on yourself,
but Nance is just a fucking delight to listen to,
even with his high (pure?) regard for US intelligence.
Far as his predictions go, same as anybody's predictions:
We shall see.

(73,535 posts)What I find interesting is that he has shortened his prediction from what it was a couple months ago. I assume that he knows a good bit of the information that hasn't been made public yet, and that this is why he thinks it will be faster now.

(3,676 posts)Trump is an easy target for foreign intelligence operatives because of his addiction to his phone and his constant tweets. He has become 100% predictable.
If he's that much of an easy target for foreign intelligence think how easy it would be for our own intelligence community.
I think Mueller has already got him -- already has the evidence he needs.
I wish they would bust him now.

(73,535 posts)I used to talk to both Rubin and Paul about "time." Rubin noted that it is always "now," and that "time" was a human concept for measuring meaningful events. Paul explained that "time" for an ant is different from "time" for a tree, which is different from "time" for a mountain.
I said that, to say this: I've seen some T-shirts being sold that say, "It's Mueller Time!"

(53,410 posts)I worry that it would mean going back to business as usual of the pre-Trump fiasco.
We forget that our government has not been a very good one in the last few decades and that it's gotten worse over time. We still have the Plutocracy and Olygarchy ruling this country. That hasn't changed, and it's one of the worst symptoms of what this country has devolved into. If Pence or Paul Ryan become President we'll be right back to the very thing that birthed the Trump win.
The fact that in this day and age we're having to re-fight for civil rights that were won is disheartening. The fact that the greatest issues of our lifetimes are being actively fought against will make the future of this planet a slide into dystopia. The Republicans will continue their march over the cliff of planetary destruction, all in their effort to squeeze more wealth for themselves and their buddies.
It could very well be that we lose all our hard won rights within five years of corrosive legislation. Maybe even sooner if Trump's anti-transexualism is any example of Republican erosion of the true job of government which is to make life for it's citizens the best one possible among nations and in history.
I fear we will lose all the progressive gains we've fought for. We're still having to fight to keep the gains we made as women, minorities, immigrants, LGBTs because we're losing them on a daily basis in the states. We're losing our voting rights too. State by state. It's profoundly alarming if you pay attention. The GOP has made huge gains and inroads into implementing their inequality agenda.
I fear that the institutional upheavals against Trump, which are just now beginning to rise will not be strong enough if they can't be focussed on him as the head of the opposition to our American Democracy. His departure will enable the GOP to put a stranglehold on our government that we will never be able to defeat. The majority of Americans will fall back into thinking everything is OK again and gaining their attention will be as impossible as it's been for decades. Trump's presence and destructively outrageous behavior is getting their attention and making them alarmed. It's waking the country up and if he's removed the country will slumber again.
With Trump as the personification of everything we don't want in our country, the resistance that we see being birthing now is exactly what this country needs to actually make progressive steps into a better future for all Americans, and for the rest of the world. If we want to change the downward spiral of our ability to take on the really great issues that Climate change is bringing our way we have to change on a fundamental level in our government. Resisting Trump and everything he stands for might just be making us stronger as a country.
Yes, we are the laughing stock of the world right now. This country has an opportunity right now to evolve into something better for us and for the world. But only if it wants to. Only if it is motivated.
I worry.

(73,535 posts)After Nixon exited, there were some valuable Congressional investigations -- the Rockefeller Commission, the Nedzi & Pike Committees, and the Church Committee. They were, of course, imperfect. But they mattered. Suddenly, the older generation couldn't call the youth, the blacks, and the anti-war movement "paranoid." There was, as I'm sure you know, a very real push-back afterwards.
So, if Trump gets booted soon, there will again be both good and bad that follows. There are a lot of forces at play, some with very different interests.
What I think is most important will be the grass roots response.
