The Gallup polls showing President Donald Trumps approval ratings state by state were released this week. And its not a good sign for the incumbent, who barely musters a majority in 17 states, totaling 99 Electoral College votes.
Nationwide, only 39 percent of people surveyed approve of the performance of President Donald Trump. As we know, of course, from the 2000 and 2016 elections, you need a majority of Electoral College votes, not the most ballots in the popular vote contest. But the news still isnt good for President Trump.
Currently, Trump has a 50 percent approval rating or higher in 17 states, according to Gallup Polling. He leads West Virginia with a whopping 60 percent of the vote (his highest nationwide), followed by North Dakota (59 percent), South Dakota (57 percent), Wyoming (56 percent), Montana (56 percent), Alabama (55 percent), Oklahoma (54 percent), Idaho (53 percent), Kansas (53 percent), Arkansas (53 percent), Kentucky (53 percent), Nebraska (52 percent), Alaska (51 percent), Louisiana (51 percent), Utah (50 percent) and South Carolina (50%). Thats good for 99 Electoral College votes ...

(5,810 posts)How much time are they willing to give him to get the mines going again? Has anyone asked these people that question? When they talk about how much he has gotten done, somebody in the media needs to ask them to spell it out. Start pressing them to give details, not just vague talking points.

(11,175 posts)The headline-writer's assumption is that Trump would get the electoral votes of all and only the states where his approval rating is 50 percent or higher. In the actual election, some people who did not approve of Trump voted for him anyway -- some out of party loyalty, some because they disapproved of Clinton even more.
The article notes that Trump and Clinton both have current national approval ratings of 39 percent. That suggests that a rerun of the 2016 matchup would again show the two of them fairly close in the popular vote (i.e., with the difference between them falling within the margin of error of a typical poll). All I'd conclude is that Johnson and Stein would do a little better in the hypothetical rerun than they did last year.

(14,565 posts)How on Earth does a positive approval rating align with carrying the state? With nothing else factored. Unbelievable. I always defend the media but this is one case in which an editor should have stepped forward. That should not have been printed, even if it was a guest column and not an article.
Last year Trump in the national exit poll had a 38% favorable number with 60% unfavorable. So essentially not much has changed with him.
Hillary's approval number has dropped. She was 43% favorable 55% unfavorable in that exit poll.
A political science professor wrote that column. Scary beyond description.
