North Carolina Democrats sold out their annual party dinner, raising more money than ever at the event. More than 6,000 new people turned out for organizing meetings across the state this year, even though it is not an election year. And Democrats have organized in more than 240 additional voting districts, helping the state party get a foothold in new communities.
Sixteen months away from the 2018 general election, Democrats are banking on turning that enthusiasm into votes that break Republican super-majorities in the state legislature and flip Congressional seats to help Democrats retake the U.S. House.
The state Democratic Party raised nearly $1.7 million in the first half of the year. The North Carolina Republican Party total is one-fourth that amount. Democrats had $1.9 million in cash on hand while Republicans had $182,000. Figures were in campaign reports due Friday, according to The Associated Press.
The next elections are November 2018 but could move up due to redistricting.
Republican finances are in line with similar periods and doesn't include other GOP sources, like $475,000 raised by Senate leader Phil Berger.

1. Who knew that the Supreme Court was really an issue in 2016? Just ask Merrick Garland
2. Who knew that trump would pull out of the Paris Accords? Yeah, I know trump said he would, but you can't believe him
3. Who knew that Women's Rights would be threatened? Trump made it clear in an NBC tape his respect for women, along with his admiration for Scalia. You remember Scalia don't you, he argued that the Constitution does not , in fact, bar sex discrimination.

4. Who knew that Civil Rights would be an issue in 2016? Didn't trump tell us some of his best friends were bigots?
5. Who knew workers rights would be an issue in 2016? Trump did say he thought the minimum wage should be increased, right after he said he thought the minimum wage should be eliminated.
6. Who knew healthcare would be an issue in 2016? Sure, trump said he would repeal the ACA, but didn't that imply that he would replace it with Medicare for all? hmmmmmmm, I guess not.
Nope, there was no message from the Democrats. Sure, the Democratic platform made it clear where the party stood on those issues, and the Democratic candidates also made that clear, but the media decided in the spirt of fairness, decided they would set up false equivalencies to "level the playing field", and they did a fine job. Every Democrat running for Senate in those critical swing states lost to the ESTABLISHMENT, incumbent, republican. Yup, they leveled the field all right, and most of those Democrats running for Senate in those swing states, were progressives.

(1,936 posts)Dems have the governor's mansion and the NC Supreme Court. New district maps could well put the legislature in play in 2018. The turnout and fundraising in an off election year bodes well for Dems. NC is the most severe gerrymander in the country and that is the main reason NC appears red at all. The 2016 presidential election ??? Clinton didn't click that well and a lot of people drank the Trump kool aid.
Sooooo ... NC "gets more red" is based on .. what?

(13,414 posts)Yes, gerrymandering and voter suppression have hugely benefitted Republicans in the state. However time and population changes (along with the costs of horrific legislation at the state level and a nightmarish president) are helping Democrats to even the odds. There's not a single state in the south which is becoming more Republican.
