Because most decent folks don't want to be a part of it. If he wants to divide America between us and them there are more of us.

(14,564 posts)but, this just runs counter to reality.
What 45 is doing is not new, republicans have been doing this for decades now - dividing this country AND it has "worked" increasingly well over time - they had more power in the states and DC than ever prior to November 8th.
It is fool hardy to dismiss what he is doing - he went from 1% support to winning the Presidency doing it, and if he were to magically disappear never to be seen again today, this process will still be in place, Rs will continue to foment hatred of the evil liberal boogyman.
There is NOT "more of us."
There are 1/3 of us - people of good conscience who care enough to vote and fight in other ways.
There are 1/3 of "them" and there are 1/3 of "those in between" who most often get sucked into the bullshit.
IF "WE" are going to win out, "we" need to be cognizant of that reality.

(99,710 posts)I am willing to run on the proposition in 2020 that either you are an acolyte of Trump and a devotee of Trumpism or you are not. There is no data that suggest a a plurality, much less a majority, of Americans favor authoritarianism. Even the most generous estimates place the number of Americans who would vote for an authoritarian candidate at thirty percent. That's Trump's base, and even some of that base will abandon him if he doesn't deliver.
Folks ignore the fact that Hitler and Mussolini were reasonably popular figures because they delivered benefits for in groups and persecuted the out groups the in groups despised. That's Trumpism.

(14,564 posts)This is what is not factored in when people just focus on the ogre.
How did he win this last time?
Because there was a decent, highly capable and proven public servant who was made out to be worse than ogre.
THIS is the problem, it did not take 51% of the country to elect him.
It was only 1/3 of the country with 1/3 of the country sitting it out or voting for a third party.
You see it in social media, you hear it around you - the effect of decades of hate framing liberals has so damaged the brand that no matter how horrible 45 is, half the country either thinks he is 1,000 times better than any democrat or "they are both the same."

(99,710 posts)Trump is a despicable and absolutely worthless human being who is willing to lie, cheat, and steal to achieve his goals. We need to find a man or woman who is up to the task. He or she must be as above suspicion as Caesar's wife.

(63,203 posts)Yeah, his approval rating is in the toilet, but so what?
His drooling acolytes would vote for him again in a heartbeat, and I see no reason to conclude that a majority of Republicans would vote against him in favor of a Democrat.

(99,710 posts)There's a whole world beyond western PA, thank God.
Since only 23% of Americans identify as Republican, 37% identify as independent, and 33% identify as Democratic his base isn't big enough to win a national election.
Orrex
(63,203 posts)Of course the world is larger than western PA (thank God, as you note), but it didn't take a whole lot more than western PA to swing the election toward the nation's asshole, however dubiously.

(99,710 posts)The Trumpers and anti-Trumpers are in a kind of a war for the soul of this nation. Hopefully the good guys win like they won the last civil War. If they lose it wasn't worth saving anyway.
I made my peace with this fact and rest comfortably.
