I knew that 90 percent of my customers wanted him to be the president, and I had a feeling that it was good for us, for the economy, and I thought that people would be happy and spend more money, Gonzalez recently told The Intercept.
Gonzalez, 36, has lived in the United States since he was 15 years old, according to the Palm Beach Post. He has no criminal record, is married to a U.S. citizen and is father to three daughters who were born in the United States.
For years, he has routinely checked in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in Broward County. ICE granted him a deportation stay in 2016. But now he faces the threat of deportation under the Trump administration, which has enforced immigration laws more aggressively than previous administrations.
When you cross the border illegally, you dont think of any of it youre just looking for a better life, you want to be at a better place, Gonzalez told The Intercept. You dont think youre committing a crime.

It could be a problem.
And his motive was profit- and getting along w his RW customers. He didn't realize they hate people like him.

(47,209 posts)And I wish they'd go after him, because he loves Trump- but he's lily white from Ireland. He's totally lost track of the wife, can't get citizenship or divorced, the idiot.

(459 posts)The whole "illegal immigration" thing is thinly veiled racism. You can tell because Trump's own wife overstayed her tourist visa, and was illegally working when here on it. Doesn't bother them one whit.

(16,173 posts)The rules are very complicated.
DFW
(54,356 posts)If not followed, the marriage is not a factor that supersedes that. Most countries have rules about marriage allowing the residence of a foreign spouse.
I had to apply for my German residence permit even though my wife is German. It went fairly quickly (about two months), but before even applying, I had to do a ton of paperwork and furnish a ton more after applying. Otherwise, it could have taken years. The only corner I got to cut was the language proficiency test.
In Germany, unless you are a Syrian refugee or a Russian with documentation that you are an ethnic German (there are others, but the categories are similar), you have to demonstrate proficiency in the German language to be granted a permit for residence and work. Even then, I get to pay their 51% taxes (90% in parts where they ignore the double taxation treaty) and get zero benefits for it. No health insurance, no pension consideration, nothing. Russians showing up with some faded I.D. with a swastika on it, claiming it's their grandfather's ID, often get a full pension, an apartment allowance and living expenses over and above what working Germans (like my wife, for instance) get. But I pay the Germans six figures a year in taxes and get nothing to show for it. Marriage and immigration aren't always keys to unlock doors, and sometimes even when the doors are unlocked, it isn't always paradise waiting on the other side.
This restaurant owner thought Trump would help ensure his paradise. Now, too late, he knows better. Voters who don't inform themselves when exercising this precious choice granted to them deserve the consequences of their (non-) action.

(16,072 posts)He had already entered the US illegally at age 15! Getting married after the fact doesn't provide any standing...and since his wife is an American citizen, he can't use their children as a reason to remain!
I'm just guessing at this...any experts out there???

(76 posts)to make sure your spouse has legal status. My husband's cousin fell in love with a Russian girl and, before they got married, she had to return to Russia to fill out applications and he had to fly to Russia, too. All in all, it took a long time for all the paperwork and other requirements to be satisfied - it's not like on TV where somebody marries a foreigner and Poof! the foreign spouse is legal.

(12,647 posts)The military has a short-cut to get their member's spouses visas and naturalization, but it still takes time, and if the member separates from the military before the process is over, their spouses are put into limbo and have to start using the normal process.
Basically if a guy (or gal) stationed in Yokosuka falls in love and marries a Japanese national, they have to get the process started as soon as they get married and hopefully not leave the military or retire before the process is completed.
Unfortunately, over the years I've known some guys who just got married for base housing, married BAQ, and to have a maid "with benefits". They'd marry her, brought her over, and pretty much ignored getting her a green card, because she had a foreign national military i.d., and that was typically enough to get around on one's own.
If she didn't know better in the first place, or didn't belong to the various wives clubs that were out there, that military i.d. was the only thing she would think she'd need to make her "legal". After all, that meant she was married to a U.S. Service member and through him, had rights and benefits - on base.

PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,848 posts)Apparently adoptive parents often don't know that they need to get legal citizenship for the child. A number of them have been deported back to their country of origin. They don't speak the language, don't know anyone there, and are barely surviving.
Googel "adoptees deported" and you'll find a number of articles.
