I don't give a damn. He supported Don Siegelman when he was forgotten.

(35,199 posts)Some news was fake, presenting error in order to get people to support the state.
Some news was partial, leading people into error in order to support the state.
Some news was true, and suited the leaders, because it would lead people to support the state.
Some news simply didn't get reported.
Concerning the USSR, fake news was positive, true news was only positive, and partial or non-news screened out what was bad. Concerning the US, fake news was bad, true news was bad, and partial or non-news screened out what was positive. You read this kind of stuff for a decade and you become very, very averse to partial news or omitting crucial information. I hate being manipulated through language.
So you could read absolutely factually correct news about the US in Izvestiya in 1978. But it was either (a) negative news or (b) only the negative aspects of actual news.
The trick every New Soviet Man had to acquire fairly early on if he was to retain any cognitive ability was to separate out the three. "Oh, that's negative, it's likely true." No shortage of bad news. "Oh, that's negative, but, you know, something's missing. Let me fill in what's missing by the shape of the story around that void." And the fake news was sometimes subtle, sometimes outrageous.
RT does the same. And RT used to be cited here a lot before 2014, but only bad news stories about the US among those who believed in American exceptionalism--American was exceptionally bad. Most of the bad stories were true. Those that weren't true, then as in 2016, were usually sourced from some US publication or news purveyor ("news" should be in quotes here; some of the worst howlers from RT and "fake news" started in oddball American newspapers).
If you could read Izvestiya, RT's no biggie and you know how to take it. But knowing how to read Izvestiya and Pravda was an art.

(45,786 posts)Not Randi Rhodes. Not Ed Schultz. Not Norman Goldman. Not Michael Smerconish. Not Rachel Maddow.
Thom Hartmann has to be recognized if only for this alone.

(10,602 posts)Thom is right on on the issues that we face. He understand better than anyone what happened to workers and how we got there. I worked for DOL for 24 years and watched the conditions evolve that let us to today.
Plus I could never understand why Obama let Siegleman stay in prison. He should have been pardoned and the Alabama shitheads prosecuted.
