and it's probably worse than we yet realize. Trump, who is nothing but a bag of foul smelling air, has blustered his way (and the rest of us along with him) into a corner. Good thing he's such a crack negotiator (or is he a negotiator on crack?) who knows lot's of people and how to make great deals. Every business he's ever run has been run into the ground with the exception of his real estate holdings and it took the intervention of large sums of Russian money to keep that afloat. Who could have possibly foreseen things going this wrong with Trump in charge?
The Washington Post reported yesterday that North Korea has a large stockpile of compact nuclear weapons that can arm the countrys missiles, including its new intercontinental ballistic missiles that are capable of hitting the United States. Thats another way of saying: game over.
Also: I told you so.
There are really two assessments in the Posts report. One, dated July 28, is that the intelligence community not just the Defense Intelligence Agency, contrary to what you may have heard assesses North Korea has produced nuclear weapons for ballistic missile delivery, to include delivery by ICBM-class missiles. The other assessment, published earlier in July, stated that North Korea had 60 nuclear weapons higher than the estimates usually given in the press. Put them together, though, and its pretty clear that the window for denuclearizing North Korea, by diplomacy or by force, has closed.
These judgments are front-page news, but only because weve been living in collective denial. Both intelligence assessments are consistent with what the North Koreans have been saying for some time, for reasons I outlined in a column here at Foreign Policy immediately after the September 2016 nuclear test titled, North Koreas Nuke Program Is Way More Sophisticated Than You Think: This is now a serious nuclear arsenal that threatens the region and, soon, the continental United States.
Authors rarely get to pick titles, and almost never like them, but I think the editors at FP got this one about right. It is about as subtle as a jackhammer, although even so the message didnt seem to sink in.
Lets walk through the evidence.
North Korea has conducted five nuclear tests. That is really quite a lot. Looking at other countries that have conducted five nuclear tests, our baseline expectation for North Korea should be that it has a nuclear weapon small enough to arm a ballistic missile and is well on its way toward testing a thermonuclear yes, thermonuclear weapon.

(55,445 posts)Trump puffed up his ballsack with a threat, the North Koreans called and raised, and Trump didn't follow through (This is why nuclear powers tend to avoid making threats)... So not only has Trump lost any remaining credibility in their eyes, he's also a coward who can be stared down...

(7,968 posts)They may go for a preemptive decapitation strike. It would be a rash move with unforeseeable consequences but I fully believe they are thinking that is what they will do.

(2,419 posts)that boxed in there aren't many options to a person who is all about appearances. What's he going to do now? This is guy who has always been about nothing BUT talk. Page 6 of the NY Post. Evening news fodder. Reality TV. He's never had to be really tough or make tough decisions before. Like I said, just a bag of foul smelling air.

(7,968 posts)I think both North Korea and the US have now put themselves in an unwinnable situation. The North's bluff will be called if they don't do their show of force Guam thing. The Administrations bluff will be called if they do nothing after a Guam test.
This is weird. I'd say 9 out of 10 times the adversary would back down. This time seems like the 10th...

(14,046 posts)Still debating whether this was pure incompetence or just part of doing his job as a Russian agent.
Probably both. Being incompetent IS his job, which ironically makes him pretty good at it.
