Thom Hartmann exposes the flaws in our system. Oddly enough, liberals like to see the flaws exposed so they can be fixed. Conservatives would rather they be hidden so they can keep doing business as usual.
Putin also likes to see the flaws in our system exposed. Odd how things work.
The simple truth is that the truth is not simple. One of the qualities I value in the liberal mind is the flexible awareness ready to examine each new fact and reexamine the old. This quality is a strength of mind that can appear as a weakness to some. Thom exemplifies this quality like few men ever have.
Yes, it has bothered me for quite some time that Thom Hartmann is on RT.
No, I have not found any evidence that Thom is acting as a Russian agent.
He has expressed things sympathetic to the Russian people. I would hope that he and everyone else would have sympathy with the Russian people and would be aware that we have not always been the good guy in all relations. Does my being sympathetic to Russia make me a fan of Putin? No, it does not. Putin is an evil dictator. I have sympathy for North Koreans. Their government is not something I love. Things are only black and white when you are a conservative. For the rest of us things remain messy.
Thom has always been a polite, respectful and well mannered host. He has let horrid folk have their say. If you listen in, he lets total bastards talk (In almost all situations) and thanks them nicely. He also makes his side clear and his side has always been with the survival of the world, world peace, humanity and the American people.
He does do something that the Russians love. He makes the flaws in America clear. I love this too. I want the flaws to be apparent so that they can be fought and fixed. The Russians want the flaws clear so they can point and use it to lower our prestige.
Does that mean I side with the Russians? I do respect and honor many of them. I do wish them to have the best possible future for their families. It does not mean I love their leaders. I think that being for the Russian people means being against Putin. It is conservatives that decide to hate a people when the dictator is the enemy. We liberals have to be a bit more perceptive.
Russia has a habit of horrible negotiation methods. In the same conversation, Thom is honest to point out that our treaties with Native Americans should be taken as evidence that we are not innocent. A conservative might say, the fact that both sides have been bad justifies it. As a liberal I want both sides fixed.
Putin is a monster. No question about it. So is Trump. Trump is president. Does that mean that everyone who serves in our government is now evil? Are all Americans evil because we have had drones kill innocents at weddings? Should we ignore our evils because we have enemies in the world?
I don't want to cast you out if you are voting on our side, but in case you have missed the point, we are the side that listens and puts truth before convenience. We are the side that considers evidence and cares for our fellow man. That may make some of us look bad at times. It definitely makes us chaotic when compared to the lockstep greed and hatred that defines the other side.
I don't see lockstep greed and hatred when I see Thom. I see a man that has used the resources available to keep a conversation exposing the truth open. Some of those resources are very questionable. Some of this becomes very interesting. If you are involved in the game, fighting against Putin or Trump may not be helped by saying how much you despise them.
To put this simple so that it doesn't crash the mind of those who see everything as black and white, yes the Russians are using Thom. Thom is also using the Russians. It is a dangerous game and I am quite sure Thom knows this better than any of us.

(115,673 posts)But having RT host his show tends to confer an undeserved level of legitimacy, at least among progressives, on Putin's media mouthpiece. It's certainly fair to question his judgment, if not his independence from its influence. He should not have put himself in the position of being used by the Russians even if, as you claim, he's using them back. RT has a much bigger megaphone than Hartmann, and he never should have affiliated himself with them in the first place.

That's all I needed to read. The "flaws in our system" obviously being that which Putin needs to cause divisiveness.
