RICHMOND Virginia State Police investigating the helicopter crash in Albemarle County that killed two state troopers have identified the victims.
Shortly before 5 p.m. Saturday, a Virginia State Police helicopter crashed into a wooded area near a residence on Old Farm Road. The Bell 407 helicopter was assisting public safety resources with the ongoing situation in Charlottesville.
The pilot, Lieutenant H. Jay Cullen, 48, of Midlothian, and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates of Quinton, died at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time by state police, the FAA and NTSB. There is no indication of foul play being a factor in the crash.

(28,876 posts)We have protestors dead, law enforcement dead, and what about the assholes who started all this in the name of their "oppression"? Can't help but notice none of them suffered anything...as usual.

(31,261 posts)It is never a good thing when good honest police officers die. I wish the best for their family and the Virginia State Police, but nothing can bring them back. Three people died today because of idiocy.

(3,268 posts)the real and only saving grace is altitude. Altitude is the saving God/Godess that gives options.Altitude is what gave Sully time to set up an approach and become a flyboy God instead of a statistic. For a helicopter survival needs a main rotor both intact and under control. Then you need enough altitude to flatten pitch and speed up the rotor. And then you have to pull pitch without stalling the blade too high. I suspect those guys didn't have enough altitude.
