Because it seems Orrin Hatch and I actually have something in common: relatives who fought in the war.

Both my grandfathers.

Against Hitler. And nazism.

One fought Royal Canadian Navy (Battle of the Atlantic).

Other was Canadian Army stationed in UK.

I'm sure many/most DUers have similar stories.

3. My Dad was in the Navy.

He helped to sink Nazi subs.

He was on a PBY flying boat.

I did not know this until after he died.

I sent for his service records.

I pretty proud of my Father for this.

The other in the Alantic.

He was door gunner and radio man.

Wish he would have told me about the subs.

I have uniforms and dog tags still.

Before that he build liberty ships.

Think I read about that once, a long time ago.

Nazi subs also came very close to the Newfoundland coast here in Canada.

Lots of Nazi subs sinking ships coming out of the ports.

It was not well know but kept secret I guess.

There were patrols on the beaches at night looking for Nazis coming off the subs to blow up ports.

I guess that is why he did not say much.

They could not make liberty ships fast enough.

5. Yes, I have a grandfather who fought the Nazis in Eastern Europe.

I never met him because he died long before I was born.

6. I never met my maternal grandfather.

He didn't die in the war, but not long after.

I know, it leaves a big empty space and so many questions.

10. My father's turning in his grave.

I lost my father when I was 4 months old, he was 28. He died in some god-forsaken mud hold in Bad Sudan, Germany fighting the Nazi's. Like you, I'm just sick . I watched in horror yesterday some of the events happening in my country and just wept.

11. I spent years of my childhood

terrified in an air raid shelter in our back yard. Listening to bombs whistling down, my mother whispering "That was close" My father had served in WWI, so was too old for WWII, He was a fire warden in the neighborhood. I grew up frightened of my own shadow, a lot of kids did in Liverpool. I thought THAT was supposed to be the war that ended all wars? Then along comes W, now Donnie. Too bad their childhoods were not as miserable as mine, wars would be avoided like the plague if they had ever lived through one.

13. My maternal grandmother and my aunt both grew up in Epsom Surrey.

They both recalled the Anderson shelter in the back yard.

They would all be stunned by what's happening today.

12. Every male in my family who was of age was in the military in WWII.

Father in England & France - Army sergeant.

His brother in France - Army. 2 Bronze Stars.

Maternal uncles - one in the Pacific (Army) despite being blind in one eye. The other was rejected by the USAF due to a heart murmur and went to Canada, where he joined the RCAF and was shot down over the Channel. His body was never recovered.

My 4'11" grandmother was in the Civil Air Patrol.

Third uncle was still a minor in the 40s, but served in Korea during that (ongoing) war.
