You live long enough (and lord knows I have) and words that once weren't slurs become so and then back again. I can't always keep up. When I was called on it, had no idea it had become a slur.

When I was young, "queer" simply meant "odd". Now there's a word that's had a history from innocuous to slur to pride to slur and back again.

When I was a teenager I worked at a grocery store and I used the phrase to a customer "jew someone down" (meaning try to get them to come down the price). I had no idea of the cultural meaning of what I was saying, and had no ill feelings towards Jews whatsoever. It was just a saying that I had heard and repeated . Fortunately, the customer talked to me about it and explained that I was being hurtful. She didn't try to make me feel bad she just educated me. I guess even some adults could be uneducated.
