A Defining Moment For Trump....

and the moment defines him as what we've known all along. He's a con man. He's an opportunist. And when things got just a little difficult, he grasped for assurance and steadiness from the only solid thing he could hold on to-the support of the dregs of our society. The racists, the white supremacists, the neo-facists who have rallied around him. That's what Trump has to buttress his sense of worth. To the rest of us, Trump was a miserable failure in the aftermath of Charlottesville, to them, a hero. Consider this:

3:46 PM:

Trump comments were good. He didn’t attack us. He just said the nation should come together. Nothing specific against us.

He said that we need to study why people are so angry, and implied that there was hate… on both sides!

So he implied the antifa are haters.

There was virtually no counter-signaling of us at all.

He said he loves us all.

Also refused to answer a question about White Nationalists supporting him.

No condemnation at all.

When asked to condemn, he just walked out of the room.

Really, really good.

God bless him.

Is this what gives him a sense of accomplishment? If that's his anchor, than it is surely what will drag him down. The world is not dominated by these people. In fact, there are many more of us than there are of them. Its up to us to insure that history reflects exactly what Trump is and this is a perfect circumstance to insure that he is remembered for his fecklessness in a time of challenge.

A disproportionate amount of what we remember about presidents has to do with how they respond to the unforeseen—either instinctively, as with Reagan’s jaunty joking as doctors tried to save him from John Hinckley’s attempted assassination, or with thought-out deliberation, as with Johnson’s (positive) decision to use the tumult of the mid-1960s as propulsion for the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965, or his (negative) step-by-step immersion into the disaster of the Vietnam war. The best testament to Kennedy’s intelligence and character came during the period of greatest danger to the world: the nearly two weeks of the Cuban Missile Crisis, during which Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev jointly prevented their nations from destroying each other, and the world.

This is a long build-up for saying: Donald Trump had such a challenge, and moment, and responsibility, and opportunity yesterday, after the Nazi violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

And he failed, abysmally.

like watching shows on TLC or eating a whole pint of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream. Revolting but curiously satisfying at the same time.

I would love to believe that all Trump can really count on right now is the support of the human flotsam and jetsam that drifted into Virginia like a sewage spill at high tide. That's all he should have right now. Unfortunately, I thinks there's still too many people that will overlook ANYTHING this guy does. I do agree that this is like his James Buchanan moment of anti-courage. At least the cave paintings that will be our history after he makes everything go to shit will be appropriately scathing.
