Putting up signs saying things like "We don't discriminate" and "If you want to buy, then we want to sell"

And they called THAT offensive.

Really.

It's like you're supposed to be pleasantly surprised when you're called an abomination and be told off by someone who says they don't want your money.

They are not ideologically conservative (at least not by any conventional definition). There is nothing behind their platform but hatred for the rights of others. There is no principled, consistent stand in defense of a right or rights in general.

Right-wing media outlets have been drumming liberals up to be nothing short of enemies of the people. Everything we do is motivated by a global conspiracy against them and their families. We are either conspirators or brainwashed. No possibility is given for us to be honestly disagreeing on an intellectual level.

It's become a very obvious effort on the part of some prominent media outlets to propagate this narrative. I'd call them conservative media outlets but really now they've, to varying degrees, shed most of their pretense and are just trump-news-networks. Don't get me wrong; there's never an excuse for an individual choosing to be a bigot and not all bigots have their views informed by media. But there should be no question why, after having it drilled into their heads for decades, most Trump supporters are utterly convinced we are the devil incarnate and deserve all the violence and hate they can get away with.

this article does a pretty good job illustrating what's been happening.

7. Free speech was Jeremy Christian's murder cry

He's the fellow who slashed three people's throats on the Max Line in Portland, killing two of them when they intervened to stop him from harassing two girls on the train. Since then, I've noticed that the Nazis have latched on to the concept of "free speech," which appears to mean, "I get to say whatever I want, insult you, threaten you, and even assault you, and you just take it because free speech, man."

The Nazis seem to be a little fuzzy yet on the whole concept, and I'm not optimistic that they'll learn anytime soon.

They want to out themselves as merchants of death and hate and bombast?
FINE BY ME...just make sure to post their pictures, find their names, expose them throughout the public square, which now includes social media and about 3,000,000,000 people (or more) worldwide. Make them OWN their words and their expressions. If they believe that hate is something that society will avoid and acquiesce to, I believe that they will find they are very, very wrong.

They can't hide under their hoods and burn crosses in the dark any more...they crave attention like the rest of the short-attention span mouth breathers that give them comfort and support.

But their "right to free speech" ends with the government not imprisoning them for thought crime or speech...as soon as they turn speech into violent actions, then all bets are off and its time to pay the piper.

Call an LGBTQ person by an epithet?
Use racial slurs as the base of your comments?
Chant Nazi slogans and recreate Nazi propaganda film scenes on American streets?

Oh, I am sorry, but your "free speech" endeth as soon as the syllables pass your worthless lips...and the consequences begin.
The reaction you seek to provoke is earned and the scorn heaped upon you is just and righteous.

If you racists and scumbags and vile reptiles want to dress up as the SS, get your little fan club hair dos and Seig Heil the night away in BillyBobJoeDumbass's farm house back 40...be my guest, but when the people of your community find out who you are, who you 'pal around with', what you REALLY stand for...then the blow back is justified and not a violation of anything.

When these people resort to the kind of incomprehensible violence that happened Saturday, the consequences of their "free speech" may also include incitement to riot, aiding and abetting and accessory to murder. The full force of law must be brought to bear on ANYONE that beats people and drives vehicles as weapons to kill and maim. You CAN say anything you want and I will defend your right to do so to my dying breath...BUT...you are also responsible for your words and the reactions they provoke. In my eyes, the organizer and promoters of the "unite the right" event are guilty of all of the aforementioned crimes...and they should stand trial for them as well.

Speech is free and MUST remain so, forever and without exception, even the most hateful and vile, bile-filled nonsense must be equally valid to say...but that's where it ends...you, me, everyone...we have the responsibility to own our speech AND its consequences. I will lay down my life to protect that principle and I believe all Americans should hold the right to free speech and freedom of assembly in the same rarefied air.
