As we watched the events and the response from President Trump over the weekend, we too felt that he missed a critical opportunity to help bring our country together by unequivocally rejecting the appalling actions of white supremacists. His remarks today were a step in the right direction and we need that clarity and consistency in the future.
Our country is facing some very difficult issues that require our elected officials, business leaders and community-based organizations to work together. Representing a company with the largest and one of the most diverse groups of associates in the U.S., and an even more diverse customer base of tens of millions of customers, we believe we should stay engaged to try to influence decisions in a positive way and help bring people together. I will continue to strongly advocate on behalf of our associates and customers, and urge our elected officials to do their part to promote a more just, tolerant and diverse society.
Thank you for representing Walmart and our values today -- and every day.

Let's make Trump's Council so small you can fit it in a bathroom.

This list is a price comparison between Aldi, Target, and Walmart.

(37,648 posts)I don't have an Aldi. I choose among WalMart, Market Basket, Sam's Choice, Target. And MAYBE online sources IF they don't charge sales tax (which leaves out Amazon).

(2,190 posts)So it can afford to charge less for its products, because it doesn't pay employees a living wage.
I would never criticize someone for shopping there, but I would also never consider shopping there myself. I already support them more than I want to, by supporting their employees who need food stamps and housing assistance.

As for buying from online sources that don't charge sales tax, almost every state requires you to pay the equivalent (use tax) on purchases that you didn't pay sales tax on. In my state, California, the line for it is included on personal income tax returns.
The fact that a lot of people don't do that doesn't make it legal.

(37,648 posts)Near me are only WalMart & Market Basket & a couple of dollar stores.
About 10-15 mins away is a SuperWalMart.
About 15-20 mins away the other direction is another Market Basket (kinda pricey locally owned store).
About 1/2 hr away is Target & Sam's Club (Sam's Club is ALSO WalMart family owned). That's about 40 miles round trip. BUT THE TARGET IS A SMALL ONE AND DOESN'T HAVE MUCH OF A GROCERY SECTION. Target also pays its employees almost the same as WalMart.
The nearest Krogers is about 45 minutes away, when the weather is good.
I read some time ago that WalMart had increased wages and cleaned up working hours. WalMart & Target pay their employees almost exactly the same. WalMart starts empees off with $9/hr, then increases to $10 when they compete a training program. Target starts them off at $10.
While these are lousy wages, they are all comparable. I think people are remembering a few years ago, when WalMart was lower than all the others. It finally caved in and raised wages.

(58,785 posts)As for prices, they're often not as cheap as they seem. Husband retired without a pension, so we do some careful shopping there. Careful.
Drain a can of their store tuna brand and turn it into a measuring cup, do the same with standard brands sold at other chain markets, and check what you've purchased. You get a lot less fish, more liquid and more "fish sludge," so that the real price is about the same or more, but not less. (And at that the standard brands are doing the same thing, just not as bad. I now buy expensive brands that are solidly packed with better quality solid tuna and cost the same or less than the cheap stuff.) Canned beans similarly with gushy beans, instead of firm, too much liquid, and the bottom of the can often full of bean sludge.
I haven't tried almost all of their "deli" and "bakery" items because what I did try was really bad. The potato salad I purchased in a hurry was very high in gooshy liquid filler and with definite chemical taste, by far the worst I'd ever come across. I tried again a year or so later at another WalMart, largely out of curiosity as a test but also not wanting to cook, and threw it away. Too bad to try to dress up.
Occasionally, I need to remind myself why I never shop there. I go in there every so often to look for the "Extra Low Prices", and I never find them. My most recent visit was part of my futile attempt at finding eclipse glasses last week. Neither store in town had them. They didn't have much of anything else that I could not get at lower prices elsewhere, and often of better quality. Heck, even the local Kroger has better grocery deals, and they're not exactly cheap.
I am so thankful that we have an Aldi in town. It's hard to beat their prices, for the most part, and the quality is excellent. Even better when it's stuff that they're trying to clear out. Talk about bargains!
However, Aldi and Target aren't always around the corner
Aldi, distance from my home, from 65 to 75 miles
Target, minimum 60 miles
For a single parent working two jobs, that a hard back and forth, especially in our winters. The closest Walmart, 10 miles.
No, I don't shop there, but I won't fault someone who has to.

(28,813 posts)Whether you like Walmart or not, the employees need those jobs. We do subsidize those jobs, but I'd rather have that than many of the programs the government subsidizes. I find the employees friendly and just like millions of other under employed, under paid, elderly or anyone in need of jobs.

(2,948 posts)I must travel 25 miles to avoid Walmart. It's easy for big city DUer's to say you would never hit the door at Walmart. I get all my paper products, bird seeds and some prescriptions from Walmart. I get my foot stuff from a local store and my dog items from the big city.

(51,584 posts)since they were mistreating their employees. A woman shopper was telling us that the workers should go to college and get a real job if they want better conditions. I wanted to yell at her but an older gentleman who was with us calmly walked with her to her car explained how stupid her argument was.

(42,751 posts)He's CEO of Wally World, a retailer. He's not a major defense contractor.
So he doesn't need to suck Trump's toes. He can say what gains a few
points for the company's image. Sorry, it's still just WalMart to me. I
only go there when I have to.

I'm curious about all this "denouncing" of Trump now, when there have been so many other things these CEOs and some politicians could have denounced him for
Methinks a few of them are jumping on the racism - because they ARE racists and terrified of getting caught at it

(37,648 posts)But WalMart, Target, & others w/o unions all pay about the same.
There may be some of the niche grocery stores, or smaller geographically-oriented stores that pay more. But most people don't have those in the area. I don't.
The wages are also to be compared with the geographical area. If WalMart pays $10/hr in a low-wage area, then WalMart is considered a decent payer. But it would be considered lousy in a higher-wage area.

(5,801 posts)please stop paying your propagandists to label the tax on large estates "the death tax" and lobbying to get it repealed.
When you do that and stop having taxpayers subsidize your employees, then I'll believe you are interested in doing the right thing.
Not holding my breath.
