Just saw a closeup video of POTUS COS

John Kelly

I saw him earlier looking ashamed and staring intently at the floor.

I even made a joke about it in another thread today.

But this time I saw the micro-expressions flit across his face. He hates Trump. Trump disgusts him. The only thing I can think of is that he really believes that he stands between the unfit moron racist in chief and a possible nuclear war with someone and so he must stay at his post. But he really wants out.

By the way, I play semi-professional poker (I can make an OK living at it) and I've trained my self to look for tells... and that's my "professional opinion" on what I saw in the close up video that just played on MSNBC

but then I remembered who and what the so-called "president" was & I had second thoughts. As Twitler gets more & more desperate as he's more & more cornered, Kelly might be the only one standing between the world and total annihilation. It's terrifying, really.

to remain "stone faced" trying to give nothing away.

You could see his neck strain with the effort to NOT allow him to move his head (although that slipped at least once), he lack of eye movement as he focused on one exact spot on the floor. Normally, no matter how fascinating the marble pattern is, you tend to move your eyes around while looking down... you are looking down to hood your eyes, which is to say trying very hard NOT to make eye contact with the people you are trying to deceive. it takes a very practiced person to lie to you while making eye contact for the entire time. Or a sociopath like trump.

My initial thought was that he knew it was going to be bad 'cause it is Trump speaking after all, so he braced himself, but was still cringing over what was said.

over their lies when they are ashamed. There is a maintenance guy where I live (now fired) who did this to me when he was confronted by someone else, in my presence, about a maintenance issue he tried to lie about (long story...I ended up in the hospital for 3 weeks because of it)

When the manager discussed how he did nothing wrong, I looked over at him and he had pulled the bill of his cap down over his eyes. I just glared at him, knowing he was too much of a coward to admit how he fucked up. He couldn't speak or look at me.

Still pisses me off just talking about it...

That told me that he was thoroughly disgusted with what he was hearing. I think we all grimaced or in my case it was a look of "OK, what else is new". None of us are really surprised, at least here on DU.

? I don't think he had an earpiece or anything which might have had him talking to someone else...

Did anyone else see that? I don't know how it matches up with what Trump was saying (I had the sound muted so as not to have to hear that cretin again)

policies. I just can't get on board with him being the "good guy" now that he's COS. He's been part of this dreadful administration from the beginning. I have no faith in anyone who would freely associate with Trump.

But it was clear to me that Trump's statements disgusted him at the press event.

And not to make him out to be a saint, but the only motivation I can see for him to take the COS position would be to somehow keep Trump from incinerating the planet.

I don't think he would do it (COS) out of loyalty... or rather, if he did, he is clearly over that now.

I found a still photo of the COS, and it's worth a thousand words. Sorry I can't link directly to the JPG image, but the accompanying article is a good read.

No word in the Trump lexicon is as tread-worn as “unprecedented.” But members of the president’s staff, stunned and disheartened, said they never expected to hear such a voluble articulation of opinions that the president had long expressed in private. The National Economic Council chairman, Gary D. Cohn, and the Treasury secretary, Steven Mnuchin, who are Jewish, stood by uncomfortably as the president exacerbated a controversy that has once again engulfed a White House in disarray.
...
When (the stronger denunciation of hate groups) failed to quell the controversy, aides, including Mr. Trump’s new chief of staff, John F. Kelly, pressed him to make another public statement. Mr. Trump’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, urged him to take a more moderate stance, according to two people familiar with the situation. But as with so many other critical moments in Mr. Trump’s presidency, the two were on vacation, this time in Vermont.
Grudgingly, Mr. Trump agreed.
...
By Tuesday afternoon, Mr. Trump’s staff sensed the culmination of a familiar cycle: The president was about to revert to his initial, more defiant stance. As Mr. Trump approached the microphone in the lobby of Trump Tower on Tuesday, aides winced at the prospect of an unmediated president. With good reason.

from Trump and he thinks there's a chance that he can stop a catastrophe, as I've seen speculated, it will take quite a bit and quite a while.

If he's a voice of reason and can keep Trump and his cabal from destroying our country I rather hope he stays. With any luck he'll help broker Trump's resignation like Nixon's COS, General Haig, did.

I was a bit surprised that Kelly, a retired general, allowed that much to show on his face. It really must have taken him by surprise.

all resign en masse. But we know what will happen. Huck will appear with a mealy mouthed interpretation of Trumpspeak. Other lapdogs will tell us what Trump really said. Ivanka will stand by good old dad, even though he did "give her to a Jew" (how does she get past that tidbit picked up by VICE). The rank and file GOP will hide under their rocks until given the "all clear" to surface again. And so it goes. Rinse and repeat.
