He hates Camp David.
Pence is gunna be there. Cut short his resume-building - er - diplomatic tour of South America to be there. He also cancelled several other things he had planned for after his original return date.
Mattis and Kelly will be there.
And Mike Pence.
The purpose is, ostensibly, Afghanistan. But why the hurry? Why can't it wait?
And why would Pence need to be there?
I know what I think could be afoot, but there is nothing whatsoever to support it, so I won't even bother. But man oh man, this one is very odd. Very odd, indeed.

Pence is a dignified demon, but a swamp dwelling demon just the same.
We'll be in end- medicare-and-social-security-mode. And unlike Trump, he'll be successful. With Ryan and McConnell rubbing their hands in glee.

(5,519 posts)IMO ... 45 was just a way for Pence to get in through the back door. Pence alone was a weak opponent opposite Hillary, but the Cheeto was a showman.
Pence got national exposure but if the Cheeto lost, he could be run again.

(9,865 posts)The country is deeply racist. But it's always been buried and denied under an iron fist of politics as usual. Racist policies and courts etc have been able to deny they are being racist. White people have not faced our history.
So I think we'd have all the same racism we've ever had but without the obviousness of Trump, we'll have a nice predictable "traditional" Republican who will calm the media and the GOP. It's as dangerous and in many ways more dangerous than ever. History will go back into denial.
I hope you're right and that all the white people in the country stay outraged as they are now, but I don't have that confidence with Pence as Prez.

(15,888 posts)Against 'false religions' and the GLBT community. All the same players from the racist crap would jump on that band wagon as well. Just take a look at the mess he left Indiana in when he left office. He would do that kind of damage and more, on a national level.

(9,865 posts)My point is that he'd get away with it better than Trump, the grandstander.
Pence is the same monster--but competent.
You and I are saying the same thing. I'm not saying racism would go away. It would be still here, bad as ever, but be more hidden, more plastered over for the masses. Like it was under Reagan.
Pence really scares me for all the reasons you cite.

It's done more for the show and to stress continuity to the public. In these circumstances as the VP has already taken a similar oath to fulfill his/her responsibilities of office - one of which may be assuming the presidency.
But when it's given you are correct that it is done by a Federal judge.

To which Trump would say, "huh? What's that in American?" At which point, Pence calls in a speaker of Navajo, the only native speaker of an American language in the White House. The man explains it to Trump in the Navajo language, which leaves an exasperated Trump to say "just give it to me so I can get it," at which point Pence uses the words you posted, and Trump finally does get it. He'll call it "fake blues," but at least he'll get the point.

(14,286 posts)Mueller has several key components now: financial records from DeuscheBank, Manafort's records from the raid, Sater's testimony and cooperation, and possibly Trump's taxes. So a subpoena to the WH of some kind is actually pretty likely. A subpoena for records on Flynn would send everyone into a fit, considering Trump abruptly left a signing ceremony when asked about Flynn.
News of this came on the same day Peter Strzok was demoted to HR at the FBI. I don't know if that is related, but it's another piece of the puzzle to consider. One wonders if he was impeding the investigation somehow, or feeding the WH info.

(243 posts)I, too, am suspicious of this Camp David thing. I'm wondering if the emoluments trial coming up will be the catalyst for the Dumpster to resign. If there is one thing more important than the Dumpster's ego is his money. If he is forced to liquidate his properties, I figure he will resign before he does that. But then there is the pardon thing he wants to use so he's between a boulder and a bigger boulder. Maybe the Nazis will come to his rescue and offer him money to stay in office.

(6,324 posts)Trump resigning this early gives them way too much chance at damage control and to try and field a viable candidate in 2020.
The GOP's absolute best case scenario is Trump resigning soon to give them 3 years to rebuild, change image, and field a candidate.
I would much rather him stay in office being whacko and blowing the GOP's chances in 2018 and 2020.
It's all to our advantage to keep him around at this point. If he resigned now we don't gain any power, Pence still controls the executive and conceivably he is smart enough and devious enough to do more damage to us in the next 3 years while not damaging the GOP daily like Trump does.
I don't think they have a chance anyway in 2020- but a Trump led ticket has zero chance in 202 while a Pence-Haley or Pence-Ryan or Pence-Scott ticket would have better odds than anything with the Trump name on it. 3 years is a long, long time in electoral politics and by then voters outside our base will he tired of Trump talk if he resigns now.
