House Democrats push GOP to do more than talk tough on Trump

House Democrats are exploring ways to push wary Republican lawmakers to go beyond measured statements denouncing last week's white-nationalist rallies in Virginia and President Donald Trump's equivocal response to them.

Three Democrats on Wednesday announced plans to introduce a House resolution censuring Trump for his remarks, which included the suggestion made Tuesday that some "very fine people" were among those who participated in the racist "Unite the Right" march and that "both sides" were to blame for violence that killed a Charlottesville, Virginia, woman and injured many others.

"We're at a very significant juncture here," Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, D-N.J., one of the measure's co-sponsors, said in an interview. "We can either have peace, or we can have this president fuel and fan the fires of violence, and that is scary. He needs to be held accountable."

The move to censure the president — which has been accompanied by parallel efforts to increase scrutiny of white-supremacist groups and to remove symbols of the Confederacy from federal property, including the U.S. Capitol — reflects a growing frustration among Democratic lawmakers and activists with the seemingly never-ending cycle of Trump controversies.

The response so far from both sides has been way too frickin polite and measured. Squinch Aug 2017 #2
Strategically, pushing a vote on impeachment before the committee has all the evidence would be bad. lindysalsagal Aug 2017 #3

I'm writing and calling my congresspeople every day to demand that the denunciation of our Nazi president be raised to deafening volume.

If anyone wants to use my letter for their own communication, here's today's:

Dear (REP OR SEN NAME)

I am extremely disappointed in the Democratic response to the President's words about Nazis and white supremacists.

As I watched the presser with nausea rising, I assumed that in the days following I would not be able to turn on a news show without seeing a Democrat in the chair denouncing the President's words. I assumed that every one of my Representatives would write a personal letter to the President as Rep. Yarmuth has done showing his disgust at the support of Nazis. I expected that the response from Democrats would be deafening and constant.

Instead, I have seen a few tweets and a resolution for censure that Democrats have no chance of getting past Republicans. The response has been impotent and luke-warm, completely out of proportion to the dangerous and un-American sentiments spouted by that man.

I am heartbroken. Where are those who I voted to be my voice in my government? Where is the roar of dissent that support of Nazis MUST be met with?

I am watching your response and I hope for better.

Your very loyal constituent,
(My name.)

Here's one from a constituent of Republican reps:

It'll take 5 minutes! Tell them we need a much louder denunciation of the asshole's Nazi rhetoric!

Better to wait until Mueller has the goods to prove he's colluding and lying and breaking the law.

It sounds like we're getting there. I don't want this bungled by running in too soon.
