I just in the NY Times that Trump is "sad" that the statues are coming down in many cities. I don't believe for one hot second that Trump has ever thought about the Confederate statues, that he has ever thought about the Civil War, that he's ever thought about the south other than something between NY City and Mar-a-Lago.

I think he realizes that the only people still "with him" is his hardcore right wing asshole Nazi base and he is appealing to them and only them at this point.
