that the GOP represents classic conservative thought - small government, local control, that sort of thing. But that GOP doesn't exist any more, to the extent it ever did. At one time there were Republicans with whom one could have a principled argument about the roles of government. And there was always an acknowledgement by all but the most radical that a social safety net should exist; the debate was about what it should cover and how much it should cost. The underlying current of racism was expressed only by what were considered to be fringe candidates like Pat Buchanan. The GOP really started going off the rails during the Reagan administration, and the GOP Steve Schmidt longs for and still believes in finally died with the election of Trump.

It's possible that the Trumpites will officially spin off from the GOP and take the worst of the party with it. We shall see.

I think we need to open up to more people like him, so we can start to build a majority again -- in State Houses and in Congress.

Such integrity, wisdom, vision and political insight. I LOVE seeing him on MSNBC, and pay attention to every single minute.

BUT, he's a Republican because he believes some of the stuff traditional Republicans do. So that makes him quite a bit less viable a candidate for membership in the Democratic Party, IMO.

I think he's grown himself since he first started appearing on MSNBC.

But I don't think he matches Schmidt in intellectual capacity or vision. Jury's out on integrity.

But yeah, I like him too. Love Jennifer Rubin, like Rick Schmidt. There are some decent GOPers out there -- not many, but a few. And that gives me some hope.
