Two of the nine starving horses seized from a property in Boone County feed on hay Friday. The horses were quarantined at a temporary holding facility in Blair.

The Nebraska Humane Society assisted officials in Boone County yesterday with the rescue of several horses from horrific conditions. NHS staffers and volunteer horse wranglers arrived to pastures eaten down to bare earth and horses that were little more than skin and bones. A few deceased horses were on the property along with many that were malnourished and emaciated.

We were able to rescue nine horses who were in the worst shape. We will work with veterinarians and nutritionists to rehabilitate these gentle giants, but we could use more help.

Their care will not be quick or inexpensive. However, we simply cannot turn our backs on their suffering.

If you can help, please do.

I would probably put it down. sometimes the humane thing to do is not "rehabilitate"

Authorities on Thursday seized nine starving horses from a property in Boone County.

Some of the horses had open sores. Some still had remnants of their winter coat, an indication of a possible, malnutrion or both. All appeared emaciated.

The horses were to be evaluated Friday by a veterinarian at a temporary holding facility in Blair.

Some horses on the property near Petersburg were dead, the Nebraska Humane Society said in a statement.
