Most were for honor or to protect someone. Sometimes it was just to slow the enemy and sap their strength.

Two examples are the defenders during the Siege of Szigetvár in 1566 and the Swiss Guard rearguard action to allow the Pope to escape down the Passetto di Borgo in 1527.

Soldiers do their duty, even if the cause is likely lost. As I said, history gives countless examples.

Now if your point is WHY ARE WE DOING IT. Madness. No other reason.

...is quite different from the policy employed which sends them to war and keeps them bogged down there.

Interesting how Trump talks about the nebulous goal of winning, yet his State Dept. resigns us to a bloody stalemate.

Because he's a narcissistic piece of shit who has to feel like he's winning every time. Why are soldiers dying in the Grave Yard of Empires - EGO.

In a 3000 level class at the Fuck You School of Management and Motivation. Make sure you take the prerequisite class Do-As-I-Say-Not-As-I-Do 1001.

Still from a military perspective it is refreshing to hear a politician come out and say "you are just pawns and we're going to keep one hand tied around your balls". Usually you get empty promises of support right before said politician runs off to a wine and cheese soiree.

...with this administration's 'Yeah, we're nazis and ratfuckers, so what?' approach to PR.

Cynical war to go with their Potemkin presidency and administration.

There are enough sheep in wolves' clothing in the military that that alone would be effective in getting them to suit up.
