And 12-18 inches of rain will be catastrophic to certain areas along the Gulf Coast that are in this hurricane's path.

Oh, I know about Katrina, I was there a day or two after it hit in NO and MS. I remember seeing dead animals, bodies, kid's wondering around the streets off I-10 without their parents the first night we got into that area. Yeah, I doubt anything will ever be as bad as that storm. Although a Category 1 hurricane hit NC last year and did unbelievable damage to FL, GA, SC, and NC. The talking weather heads at that time sure weren't expecting that to happen, were they?

At some point, the decision will be out of your hands if you want to leave. Imagine every road leading away from your community clogged with slow moving or stopped traffic. You don't want to be trapped on a road during this storm.

Before you leave, if you take medications for things like hypertension or diabetes, heart meds, make sure you have enough to last for several days. If you have prescriptions at major chains like Wal-Mart Pharmacy, take your bottles with you and get refills at pharmacies a safe distance from the storm if there is no time before you leave.

Pack up important papers and documents (like insurance papers) to go with you. If there is time, take photos of your home, inside and out to help document the contents in case there is a dispute with your insurance company. Don't delay your departure to do this, but if you can do it in a few minutes, do it.

Don't take this storm lightly. If it ramps up to a Cat. 3 storm as storm forecasters predict it might, it will bring major devastation wherever it hits. If it doesn't do that, consider yourself fortunate and heave a sigh of relief. These storms are among nature's most vicious with wind, rising tide, surges plus rain measured in feet!

Your window of opportunity to evacuate safely is closing. Even if it is a gorgeous day at the beach today, the calamity is out there and moving slowly upward and will change your beautiful day into your worst nightmare in a few hours. So act now, listen to the weather professionals, emergency management and ignore rumors. Act on facts, not wild rumors.

you don't need your prescription bottles if you use a major chain, they have your order on file nationwide.

If you use a mom and pop shop, the new pharmacist may need the bottle.

For everyone DON'T SKIP YOUR MEDICINE. If your prescription runs out, gets ruined, etc. in every state in the Gulfsouth region (and I assume nationwide), pharmacists have the authority to refill a script that is out of refills in an emergency. Usually only for a limited period of time, but it will get you there.

and needed to refill my meds before I left. Wouldn't you know it, my insurance wouldn't approve it because it was "too soon" to be refilling it. By only a day or so, but they would not budge. So I just took my meds with me and got them refilled in Mass. after I got there. Eventually, the next refill had to be transferred back to my home town but it was no big deal.

There are all kinds of things you need to do if you evacuate but making sure you have your meds or a way to refill them should be a high priority. Some medications, if you stop taking them abruptly, can cause very adverse reactions. So please don't minimize this. As Sgent said, in an emergency, the pharmacies can help you out for a short while.

It was/is the costliest and had the most deaths of any natural disaster (6,000-12,000). It was a Cat 3. The entire island was raised 17' afterwards. It ended up heading north and even effected NYC.

The Gulf waters are unusually warm and most of us have already said to ourselves, "This is the new normal with climate change". I am sooooo glad we got out of that ridiculous Paris Agreement...what a waste of time and money.

This hurricane is following a similar if slightly southern path to the Cat 4 that hit the in 1886. Four hurricanes hit Texas that year, including 2 majors.

On edit: it was Hurricane Number 5 for the year and came ashore on 20 Aug.

Gas stations went dry days before the storm - and there was NO gasoline available for nearly 4 weeks between Pcola and NoLa.

You couldn't even find gas containers.

I-10 was a parade pickups from AL and MS transporting gasoline back to AL, MS and LA.

If hurricane Rita had made landfall in MS, AL or Pcola - no one would have bee able to evacuate.

It was terrifying - and neither JEB or W cared.

Galveston at 10 ft sea level, Houston at 40 ft sea level and virtually no drainage - it floods in summer thunder showers.

Three feet of rain possible!

I hope FEMA is ready.

and about 50 miles inland. The local newspaper is saying up to 30 inches of rain and during the next six days it may get up to 40 inches.

The store shelves started to clear out today. None of the stores (including convenience stores) has bread in stock. The newspaper print an edition two days earlier than normal.

They are now ordering mandatory evacuations at Port Aransas. The area from east of Victoria towards Houston are expected to get the greatest deluge.

and I'm sure gas stations have run out of gas all over South TX - and will remain dry for many weeks after the skies clear.

I'm glad I live in Maine - hurricanes suuuuuuuuck.
