Killing Jews is part of Confederate Heritage?
The protest march in Charlottesville was supposedly about Confederate Heritage concerning the Robert E Lee statue.
I still have not seen what the statue has about hatred of jews but it makes sense to the Nazis/KKK.
from the folks who had a 'permit' in Charlottesville.

We killed six million Jews the last time, he answered. Eleven million is nothing.
(also comments about 'the ovens' during the march)
Did REL hate Jews?

(1,896 posts)It seems an ethnic group which doesn't have a presence is exotic, but once they arrive the mob mentality takes over.
I don't mean to suggest the CSA was some shining moral beacon in any way, just that they probably weren't measurably more antisemitic than most of the rest of Western Civilization. And that their postwar heirs adding all sorts of antisemitic, anti-Catholic, etc. platforms to their position really diverges from the original they claim to revere so.

I think the anti semetism didn't make its way into southern white supremacy until the 1920s. I could be wrong.

(1,896 posts)It's hard to forget influences like Houston Stewart Chamberlain on antisemitism, too. He was decidedly post-war.

Wonder what they would think about Itzhak Perlman? A "disabled' Jew with fat fingers( by his own admission- the fingers, that is).
If they knew my last name they would probably wack me on the head with a baseball bat.

(28,075 posts)I always took a certain amount of pride in having belonged to a group that the Klan hated. Broke my heart when the "liberalized" their views and decided to let Catholics join.
Though the history is another reason that priest who admitted to having been a Klan member should spend the rest of his life repenting.

To this day, I do not feel comfortable using the work "J__," because of that bigot. I know it is acceptable, but it just seems derisive to me because of the hatred I heard from him and others. I always say something like "Jewish people," even when it is somewhat awkward.
Here's his photo. This guy used to swear he was not a racist, right up until they hauled him off to jail for bombing a Black church in Birmingham -- I never believe someone with a confederate flag who says they aren't a bigot:

(53,938 posts)Their hate of Jews is almost a non-worthy topic of discussion for both, and, as exemplified above, there are always those who find an exception to the rule, and pretend it is the rule. The lives of Jews are unimportant and unworthy to way too man people, which is why anti-Semitism is glossed over, until people feel the need to shame Jews for speaking out (like Billy Joel), for not speaking out (Jared, Cohn), or for not leading up the charge at every fucking slight against any other group. So, when it comes to Jews, well, we know the score.

(11,949 posts)They are way worse. They are white nationalists and neo-nazis. They hate everyone who is not like them.
Ironically the South was more welcoming to Jews in the 19th century than many other areas of the country...as long as they kept to their place. It had to do with their Calvinist religion and the whole Jews are the people of god. I was raised baptist and was taught that we should appreciate Jews because before Jesus returns they will all become Christians. Bat shit crazy and I bet the Jews in the South thought so as well. But it kept them from total oppression.
That change with the klan. They just hate the different.

(18,124 posts)these jewish southerners wanted to keep blacks enslaved...so they fought and died for that to happen? Right?
I would guess Jews had very few slaves. They were generally merchants.
They fought just like everyone else in the south fought.
Once their states seceded and the regiments were formed, they fought like everyone else did.
The Confederacy put 75 % of the adult white men in the south in uniform. No other group of Americans ever put that percentage of people under arms other than Indian tribes.
PS - I realize your question was probably rhetorical.

(18,124 posts)the question of jewish people fighting for the south and the reasons why. Knowing that there were jewish people who fought for the south, reason(s) notwithstanding, now I want to know why outside of the pure patriotism and self serving reason(s).....I realize they were merchants who did not want to raise the suspicions and ire of their neighbors as one reason, yet something tells me there are deeper reasons for them to kill others in defense of racist hate......don't get me wrong, ....in this case I am just trying to understand motivation outside of patriotism.....it's something like my questions surrounding ben carson, omarosa manigault, katrina pierson being vocal and active supporters of a racist who hates black people.
Their reasons outside of obvious hate of their own color projected onto black people is a burning question I must find answers to, just to understand the traitorous mind...to a ALL that is decent and reasonable. Any traitor to right and decency is a complicated many layered individual. We can see that today multiplied by the millions that voted for their leader, the traitor in the WH imitating a potus.
Whether you see my question as an attempt to make just a point is irrelevant to me, it is query into the minds of traitor to all right and decent that human beings should never stop trying to attain. Yet it seems that quest is at a standstill and regressing back to the caves of early ancestors of some.

(14,308 posts)There is quite a bit already written about Jews in the Confederacy. I think you'll find that they fought for the same patriotic reasons as their neighbors. When their states left the Union and formed a new nation, and that nation went to war, they went to war with it just like their non-Jewish friends and neighbors did.
The other thing I think needs research though is what the federal government meant to people in 1860. The relationship between the people and the federal government was so different from the world today that it needs to be understood to understand the times back then. The average person today deals with the federal government all the time, but back then, think of a world without income taxes, national parks, social security, medicare, medicaid, unemployment, food stamps and even food and drug regulations.
I have my own academic interest in the Confederacy. I have studied the Confederate Constitution. It is the only time that a group of learned men ever looked at the US Constitution and decided what to keep and what to change. They met in committees for weeks, groups of former congressmen, senators, and judges and in the end didn't make many changes. They even decided to keep the electoral college. They did decide a president can't run for reelection and got one six year term. They put in a line item veto.
Anyway, good luck in your research from this old history teacher and textbook author.

(25,216 posts)I don't think the CSA had anything against Jews. I say this because there were so few Jews in the country in 1860. A handful of Jews were valued as merchants and would set up shops in out of the way places. Once Jews started immigrating in the late 19th century, the KKK turned their wrath against them.
