(620 posts)last night and mentioned that Tropical Storm Claudette (1979) still holds the 24-hour rainfall record. 43 inches of rainfall in just 24 hours recorded in Alvin, TX.
They referenced this page on their site. Fascinating stuff. https://weather.com/news/weather/news/extreme-rainfall-records-united-states
Two other amazing records that stood out to me:
In just 60 seconds, 1.23 inches of rain fell in Unionville, Maryland, on July 4, 1956. (Also a world record)
A rainfall total of 13.80 inches was estimated to have fallen near Burnsville WV over the course of just one hour on Aug. 4, 1943.

Or are we just seeing more and more news coverage and greater impact to humans because we have more crap and people in the path?
We can't say that storms are more common when we just now ended one of the longest periods in history without a major storm making landfall.

(6,324 posts)As they say, weather is not climate. Just like I always tell people when they say "where is your global warming" when it's unseasonable cold.
I also am hesitant to ascribe it to climate change because this was the first major store to make landfall in the US since Katrina, well over a decade. That's an unusually long period without major storms and you can't attribute this storm to it without also attributing the really good fortune we have had to go a decade without a major hurricane making landfall to it.
We can't cherry pick and only say the bad stuff is climate change, so we need to frame our arguments with some thought.

(63,203 posts)Just this week I heard one Red-voter explain to another that most of the world's CO2 emissions come from plants, because they exhale it in abundance. And why is it a bigger issue lately? I guess the plants are breathing harder, or something.
