As a clear logcal opinion without any baggage from other news my answer would be to disapprove for lack of evidence to approve of him for any reason, as well as the fact that it would be politically prudent for Democrats to be honest.
On the other hand, I will commmend him for wearing clothes.

(80,708 posts)A lot going on in there, yes sir.
The beauty parlor is filled with sailors, the circus is in town
Here comes the blind commissioner, they've got him in a trance
One hand is tied to the tight-rope walker, the other is in his pants
And the riot squad they're restless, they need somewhere to go
As Lady and I look out tonight, from Desolation Row
Cinderella, she seems so easy, "It takes one to know one, " she smiles
And puts her hands in her back pockets Bette Davis style
And in comes Romeo, he's moaning. "You Belong to Me I Believe"
And someone says, "You're in the wrong place, my friend, you'd better leave"
And the only sound that's left after the ambulances go
Is Cinderella sweeping up on Desolation Row
Now the moon is almost hidden, the stars are beginning to hide
The fortune telling lady has even taken all her things inside
All except for Cain and Abel and the hunchback of Notre Dame
Everybody is making love or else expecting rain
And the Good Samaritan, he's dressing, he's getting ready for the show
He's going to the carnival tonight on Desolation Row
Ophelia, she's 'neath the window for her I feel so afraid
On her twenty-second birthday she already is an old maid
To her, death is quite romantic she wears an iron vest
Her profession's her religion, her sin is her lifelessness
And though her eyes are fixed upon Noah's great rainbow
She spends her time peeking into Desolation Row
Einstein, disguised as Robin Hood with his memories in a trunk
Passed this way an hour ago with his friend, a jealous monk
Now he looked so immaculately frightful as he bummed a cigarette
And he when off sniffing drainpipes and reciting the alphabet
You would not think to look at him, but he was famous long ago
For playing the electric violin on Desolation Row
Dr. Filth, he keeps his world inside of a leather cup
But all his sexless patients, they're trying to blow it up
Now his nurse, some local loser, she's in charge of the cyanide hole
And she also keeps the cards that read, "Have Mercy on His Soul"
They all play on the penny whistles, you can hear them blow
If you lean your head out far enough from Desolation Row
Across the street they've nailed the curtains, they're getting ready for the feast
The Phantom of the Opera in a perfect image of a priest
They are spoon feeding Casanova to get him to feel more assured
Then they'll kill him with self-confidence after poisoning him with words
And the Phantom's shouting to skinny girls, "Get outta here if you don't know"
Casanova is just being punished for going to Desolation Row"
At midnight all the agents and the superhuman crew
Come out and round up everyone that knows more than they do
Then they bring them to the factory where the heart-attack machine
Is strapped across their shoulders and then the kerosene
Is brought down from the castles by insurance men who go
Check to see that nobody is escaping to Desolation Row
Praise be to Nero's Neptune, the Titanic sails at dawn
Everybody's shouting, "Which side are you on?!"
And Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot fighting in the captain's tower
While calypso singers laugh at them and fishermen hold flowers
Between the windows of the sea where lovely mermaids flow
And nobody has to think too much about Desolation Row
Yes, I received your letter yesterday, about the time the doorknob broke
When you asked me how I was doing, was that some kind of joke
All these people that you mention, yes, I know them, they're quite lame
I had to rearrange their faces and give them all another name
Right now, I can't read too good, don't send me no more letters no
Not unless you mail them from Desolation Row

(80,708 posts)Misrepresenting them, in actuality. The fact of the matter is, we are allowed to criticize Democrats, here, when appropriate.
Senator Feinstein, while certainly a long-standing member of our party who has done many good things over the years, has demonstrated in various ways a degree of disconnect from where her constituents stand on major issues.
Witness her stance on legal cannabis, which is roundly supported by a majority of California voters.
https://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2016-04-05/oldest-us-senators-accused-of-holding-biased-marijuana-hearing
In short, DiFi is not exempt from criticism any more than anyone else. When she makes a mistake, we're free to point it out. "Normalizing" Trump is, to many of our minds, a big mistake.
brush
(53,741 posts)defacto7
(13,485 posts)But I admit she wasn't careful enough about her words to communicate her intention well. Mistakes are damaging unfortunately but Dems should defend Dems when they make errors in judgement less than .1% of the time. Compare that to Trumps 100% error history and Dems can't begin to compare the two.
I'm unhappy we've come to view everything so polarized that we hang our own over normal misstatements.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,708 posts)What am I missing?
Trump is a sociopath. The only difference between Trump and a gangster like John Gotti is the latter wasn't born into an affluent family.
defacto7
(13,485 posts)I just think there's a timing issue that connects Finstein's guffaw with approving or disapproving of her, not him. I think she goofed up but I also think we have to support the fact that she doesn't goof up enough to not defend her when she tripped. That's unity.
Your question is good, it's just hard to separate it from the other news.

(5,914 posts)As much as I disliked him as a President and still resent him for the mess his administration got this country into.
1) His kids turned out okay. His daughters seem like genuinely nice and capable people. Maybe that was more their mother's influence, but he couldn't have been too bad a father.
2) His paintings are actually pretty decent. He really shows some talent there, and it says something about him that it is an art that he wanted to learn.
3) He's been going around visiting wounded veterans and painting their portraits. Maybe he feels guilty about his involvement in their plight. Well, if that's true, at least he feels that emotion.
4) His first words when standing after hearing Trump's inaugural address were reportedly, "Well, that was some crazy shit." In that moment, he uttered out loud exactly what I was thinking. So he and I must agree on some things.
I absolutely cannot think of one, not ONE, good thing to say about Donald Trump, in the same way that I cannot think of a single good thing to say about colorectal cancer. I submit that anyone who does say anything good about him is lying.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,708 posts)One time he was visiting some wounded soldiers and a mother lit into him and said it was his fault her son was wounded. He just took it. His aide asked him why. Bush said she ie entitled to her feelings. Compare that to Trump's attacks on the Khans.
His kids are great, wholly formed people. Compare them to Ivanka, Junior. and Eric.

(11,725 posts)I try, hard to be driven by evidence. If someone does something good, then they can be complemented on the positive action. Stalin was a horrible, horrible person, absolutely horrible. Without his resolve however, WW2 would have turned out much differently than it did. Again, that is not to say that Stalin is great, or a good leader, or anything. It is saying that he had resolve to fight on which helped to defeat the Nazis.
If Trump ever does anything that actually benefits humanity, then that would require honest assessment. That doesn't mean that he still isn't the shittiest president in modern history and a horrific human being. It just means that he did something positive.

Frankly, that's all I could think of, but, barring Jeffrey Dahmer, I really try to see good in people.
Many years ago, there was a really vile, creepy, misanthropic boy in our neighborhood who terrorized all the little kids something fierce. He committed suicide. And all of a sudden, we remembered that he loved his little sister. And that she was probably feeling his loss. I have always remembered that; I carry it around with me. And as a result, I truly believe that if you scrape away the ugly deep enough, you find good in everyone.
Three Republican Senators blocked the repeal of the Affordable Care Act. So no, I don't hate all Republicans. Some of them are truly capable of doing good for the American people.
Trump is doing an absolutely SHITTY job as president. In fact, I truly think that he's a horrible excuse for a human being. But if, in some insane moment, he was nice to a child, not for a photo op, but because he found it within himself to connect with another human being, I would recognize it and applaud it.
