He always gives them his undivided attention for a few seconds. And both he and the children come away better for it. The exchange of energy is easy to see.

(53,410 posts)I've seen the interaction between President Obama and children in so many photos that I was inspired to gather a few and show them together.
Children aren't able to pretend to be drawn so close to anyone. Their reactions are spontaneous and I believe he's totally genuine in his reaction to them. He 'gets' children.

In this 1963 photo, 16 year old Bill Clinton is seen shaking the hand of then-president John F. Kennedy. Clinton was chosen as a delegate that represented the Legion boys nation from Arkansas.

(57,936 posts)In fact, their parents will never let them forget. And that is wonderful because it is based on experiences like this and the memories of them that a child's character is created.
Character is, in part, the story that we tell ourselves about who we are and what we mean in the world -- to our family, our friends, our God (if we believe in one), our country. And these children will develop their feelings about their role in the future of our country in part based on these photographs and the stories they are told about them.
Some are even old enough to remember these moments for themselves.
This is how a president should interact with children in crowds.
lunatica
(53,410 posts)the older kids will never forget that moment.

(4,756 posts)It is what I am usually thinking when I see a picture of President Obama with a child. The moment will become a part of the child. It is magical in a beautiful way.

(4,033 posts)I think about the "hope" he gives these children. When I saw him in Pittsburgh last week, there were 3 young African-American brothers in front of me with their parents. They were 11, 9 & 8. The 9 year old says he wants to be a Supreme Court Justice. According to his Mom, he had done a report for school on Brown v. Board of Education this past year & that's what he wants to be.
I also think about the hope he gives me a 55 year old white woman, and the hope for this woman's 82 year old mother, 3 brothers ages 59, 54 and 51. Along with nieces and nephews from 17 up to 31 years old.
