NYC bus driver catches girl who fell 3 stories

The Associated Press
Tuesday, July 17, 2012 8:11 AM EDT

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City bus driver was being hailed as a hero for saving a 7-year-old girl who fell three stories from an air conditioning unit outside a Brooklyn building.

"I just prayed that I'd catch her," Stephen St. Bernard recalled after rescuing the child on Monday.

"'Please let me catch her, please let me catch her.' That's all I could say," he added.

St. Bernard said he was walking home from work when he observed a commotion outside the Coney Island housing complex. He saw the girl standing on the air conditioning unit, seemingly unafraid and moving about.

That does not, however, detract form the heroism he displayed here. I hope he has a speedy recovery; the article says he "suffered a torn tendon in his shoulder."

My autistic daughter use to give me fits at that age, she is 16 now, and is the soul of caution. But, as a grade school aged child, she was absolutely fearless.

Anyone else catch his last name? How ironic is that?

If he's injured he might not be able to work. If his bosses are authoritarian enough, they may feel that saving the girl was less important than not injuring himself and being available to work.
