are any current NASCAR drivers military veterans?
Given what the various NASCAR organization figures have said about the kneeling controversy, how many drivers and NASCAR celebrities served in the US military?
Simply curious.

Going back to the past, team owner Bud Moore was a decorated Normandy & Battle of the Bulge veteran
NASCAR's very first champion, Red Byron, had very severe leg injuries due to anti aircraft fire in a B24 and raced with a stirrup attaching his foot to the pedal
Longtime legendary car owner and crew chief Smokey Yunick served as a B17 pilot in WWII
I do recall Richard Petty and other top drivers going to Vietnam a few times for USO trips when that war was going on
Those are just a few that come to mind

(17,862 posts)talking about drivers and support personnel who served in Vietnam. I have to think that few top of the line racers served. The one driver listed in the article capped out at Busch series.

(42,641 posts)I would think that most drivers start driving at a very young age. And if they are good enough they might see little opportunity in the armed services.
