....shooting into the dark at a 40 story tower full of hotel guests that's hundreds of feet away will probably do little more other than getting more people killed.

Plus you don't normally just start firing in the direction of a hotel.

5. The idea of some gun-toting cowboy stopping something like this is ludicrous.

Heck, when Gabby Giffords got shot, some elderly lady brought down the shooter. There were plenty of armed gunners in the audience, who couldn't react as fast as they had played it out in their minds or front of a mirror. The logistics were against them too.

The fact is, those who were carrying guns probably contributed to the shooting by supporting lax gun laws and white wing candidates.

and were an expert shooter with it... at night... at a target where if you missed you likely would endanger innocents... and you had information about wind and temperature, etc.

Anything else would be

a) a waste of time (you aren't going to even frighten the shooter much less stop him)
b) likely to frighten the crowd causing them to run back into the line of fire from the shooter
c) cause someone (or the police) to decide that YOU are the shooter (or a second shooter) and they try to shoot you causing even more mayhem and panic.

good guy with a gun is nonsense.

Not you. And they can carry anything their department allows: 50 caliber counter-sniper rifles, suppressors, full-auto everything, "destructive devices" (aka bombs & rockets).

to take out a shooter 32 floors up at night... then of course they didn't have reason to use their carry guns anyways. Sometimes running and hiding is the only option.

at 200 yards.

Most folks only shoot in the 7-10yd range for their CC firearms.

Now I enjoy shooting the 100 yd gong with my CC pistols as much as the next person, but it's only for grins and giggles, not for "serious" work.
