Jason Aldean Covers Tom Petty As 'SNL' Responds To Las Vegas
Saturday Night Live breaks its format only rarely. The cold open sketch, which addresses one of the week's big news stories, is one of its immovable objects. But from time to time, they do change the structure — perhaps most famously when the show returned after September 11, when Paul Simon opened it singing "The Boxer" surrounded by New York City firefighters and police, as well as then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani.
This Saturday night, SNL broke format again. The show opened on Jason Aldean, who was on stage at the Route 91 Festival in Las Vegas on October 1 when the attack began that left 58 people dead and injured nearly 500. Aldean introduced himself and spoke about solidarity with everyone who was hurting in the wake of the shooting. "When America is at its best," he said, "our bond and our spirit, it's unbreakable." He then performed "I Won't Back Down," from Tom Petty's huge 1989 album Full Moon Fever. Petty died Monday night, the day after the shooting, from cardiac arrest. A song like "I Won't Back Down," actually not unlike "The Boxer," delivers a general message of perseverance that will be read in a variety of ways by a variety of audiences. And in that way, it echoes the difficulty of responding to tragedies: It's clear that there's a challenge to persevere against, but it goes unstated what that challenge is. But while Aldean didn't address it, the show didn't avoid the gun control debate that has raged since the shooting. Later, "Weekend Update" began with host Colin Jost saying, "The investigation into the tragedy in Las Vegas this week has sparked a larger debate in America between people who want common-sense gun control and people who are wrong." http://www.npr.org/sections/monkeysee/2017/10/08/556479829/jason-aldean-covers-tom-petty-as-snl-responds-to-las-vegas

1. I thought it was a horrible choice
No disrespect to Petty (it was never his intent with this song), but if one were to choose a song of his to reference the tragedy in Las Vegas, where a gun-hoarding psychopath used automatic weaponry to murder dozens and maim hundreds of innocent people—and in which the issue of desperately needed sensible gun laws is being discussed, one would not choose lyrics with the repeated refrain:
I'll stand my ground I mean, really, given how distasteful all the Stand Your Ground laws are in the discussion of gun violence and gun culture in this country, is that what you would choose? I was revolted. (Plus, what a weak voice.) |

2. My daughter immediately pointed out...
this wasn't very respectful of musical guest Sam Smith and the kerfuffle over his hit song "Stay With Me," and this song choice.
A lot of wrong here. ![]() |

20. What Kerfuffle over "Stay With Me"
What was the problem with "Stay With Me"?
I did not have a problem with Jason Aldean singing "Stand My Ground"; however, Sam Smith's "Pray" might have been a better choice to start the show. "Pray" probably would have been a sad way to start the show, but it also might have been more touching. Maybe Saturday Night Live was trying to both honor Tom Petty and strike a defiant tone. |

10. That's new country
They don't sing. Mostly it's either talking or barking orders at the listener of the appropriate elements of being "country".
See post #9 for a more full explanation. |

13. Y'all dumb motherfuckers want a key change?
I love it...
Hank Williams is rolling in his grave and most of the remaining artists who would count as actual country artists can't last much longer. |

21. Bravo!
I despise most of the garbage that is contemporary country. To begin with, a great deal of it is third-rate rock where some lap steel is added and the singer emphasizes a pretentious twang in their vocals.
It's not surprising either. It's been easy to see it coming since at least the 1990s. EDIT TO ADD: The comedian could have included lyrics about stylists and personal trainers to make it more on-point. |

5. I couldn't agree more
I don't know anything at all about this singer, but I have to think that Tom Petty would have been uncomfortable with the choice as well.
I would have gone with this cover instead without the musical bridge. Something in the Air - Thunderclap Newman Call out the instigator Because there's something in the air We've got to get together sooner or later Because the revolution's here And you know it's right And you know that it's right We have got to get it together We have got to get it together now Run through the fields and houses Because there's something in the air We've got to get together sooner or later Because the revolution's here And you know it's right And you know that it's right We have got to get it together We have got to get it together now Call out the instigator Because there's something in the air We've got to get together sooner or later Because the revolution's here And you know it's right And you know that it's right We have got to get it together |

9. Yep. New country is more about lifestyle and caricature than music
He said he was dressed as Lil Wayne
![]() Okay so I spent 3 hours in the new country world this summer. We'd switched gyms and our new one has many branches but only one outdoor pool. It's in red RED HICKVILLE. My daughter and I got there and heard a Seals and Croft song I love. Then I really didn't notice it until we got out of the pool. One really bad country song....then another... then another. Finally I went over to the check in table and asked "Do you all play anything other than new country?" They laughed. Apparently the mothers complain if anything else is played because it's "not appropriate". I determined it was more about the artists than the message if you get my drift. Here's the thing though. First it was LOUD, so loud people couldn't hear the lifeguards whistles - twice I saw one have to get down from his chair and wave his arms to tell people to stop siting on the rope etc. Second, the lyrics took weird turns in every song. I'm not a musician but I'd never heard songs that labor to include some mention of pickup trucks boots and cowboy hats. The themes were that this is what you are supposed to think and what to do to fit into the country lifestye. Lastly there was hardly any actually singing. It was mostly barking orders at the listener. I love the pool and this was our only trip for th whole summer. |

8. It was stupid - disrespectful to Petty, whom he didnt bother to mention and
He mentioned absolutely nothing about doing something (anything) to change the situation. What the hell does “We will stand together” even mean?It struck me as highly opportunistic, coming from two-bit entertainer.
Fuck that weak ass watered down country singer. |

No message about preventing such atrocities in the future.
No visible emotion, even though he was there and watched people die. No acknowledgement of his source material. It left me cold. |

15. Aldean is textbook "new country"...
... and performs based on an algorithm of what gets the most cash.
Doesn't have an artistic bone in his body and desperately needs a full sound system and autotuner to sound good. |

17. There's real emotion and complexity...
... in much of the classic country.
Then something happened right around the Garth Brooks era and the stuff that made it to the radio just lost its soul. There's still good stuff out there in the same vein as the earlier good stuff but you won't find it on your local 'country' station. |

As well as selected works from other classic Country artists.
