Massachusetts Business Owner Destroys His Brand After Photo with Trump Published

<snip>By Laurie Loisel Globe Correspondent October 16, 2017

HOLYOKE — Business owners in Western Massachusetts apparently associate themselves with the 45th president at their peril.

Just ask Dave Ratner, owner of Dave’s Soda and Pet City, a small chain of shops selling the unlikely combination of pet supplies, birds, fish, and beverages for humans. Ratner attended President Trump’s signing of an executive order authorizing changes to the Affordable Care Act designed to create cheaper — and less comprehensive — health insurance plans. An Associated Press photograph of the event, with Ratner smiling broadly behind Trump, has come back to haunt him, big time.

“It was 42 years of building a wonderful brand and having it destroyed in one day,” said Ratner, interviewed Sunday morning after what he terms “the worst two days of my life.”<snip>

<snip> For some of Dave’s customers, that explanation is not good enough. Comments on the company website and on social media have been brutal. Some have called him a scumbag or a fool. In an interview with the Globe, Ratner was moved to tears several times.

Ratner’s Northampton store manager, Shannon Durand, said her shop has been swamped with angry phone calls. Most people, she said, “just wanted to yell.”<snip>

Ratner is a two-bit "celebrity" in his tiny Western Mass town. When I lived there we saw his commercials all the time. Hokey. Low rent. Anyone who has ever lived in such a market knows of these types of retail celebrities. Ratner was pretty much a goof. Just look at him he looks like a character from central casting. Anyway, I imagine that when someone of his stature (or, perceived stature) gets an invitation to visit the White House -- never mind actually being in a photo-op with the freakin' president -- their minds go foggy and the automatic reaction is to say "HELL YEAH!"

The real question is, if he's so big on providing insurance for his employees, how did the "good businessman" not know what Trump's plan was? Everyone who pays any kind of attention knew it. From that perspective, it's pretty difficult for me to believe he was duped. As another poster said, he probably jumped at the chance to cut his overhead substantially by only having to provide junk insurance to his minimum wage employees.

Petshop boy was upset when the ACA passed that his little industry group no longer had negotiating power over insurane rates. Instead of being happy that he no longer had to negotiate and that more people were now insured, he was whining because he lost "negotiating power." Cry me a river.

He's not sorry he supported the EO, just terribly sorry he got "caught." I don't buy that the was naive or uninformed. If you're going to washington every year regarding an issue then you better know something about that issue.

I hope his former customers send him stories when they, their family members, or their friends loose insurance. That would be the real learning experience for petshop boy.

Regardless of politics, pets need to eat. I doubt there's a lot of turnover in pet store customers. I'd be more concerned with the epic evil perpetuated by large corporations than some small business.

Dave Ratner: I was duped by the White House. I do not support Trump's executive order on health care (Letters)

edit .... fuck him

https://www.bizjournals.com/boston/news/2017/10/12/mass-business-owner-at-trump-health-care-signing.html

Dave Ratner got chills as President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence walked into the Roosevelt Room of the White House to sign an executive order Ratner called "a huge deal for all small businesses.”

“No matter what you think of Trump or his policy, this is a good thing,” said Ratner, who owns seven Dave’s Soda and Pet City stores in Western Massachusetts. “It was, 'Holy smokes, I’m here with history.' It was very cool.”

The big question is, will this change his mind? Will it make him understand how loathsome and hated Trump and his policies really are, or will Ratner just dig in his heels like most Trump supporters do? I do feel badly for the employees who will wind up losing jobs through no fault of their own, but these idiot Trump supporters need to wake the fuck up. We're not playing here. People lives are at stake.

You stood behind a racist, sexually abusing, embezzling con artist with a big grin on your face and you're wondering why your customers will now take their business elsewhere?

You're an idiot. Try selling stuff for people to deal with the nuclear war Trump is goading North Korea into starting. You can make some profits there.

Mon Oct 16, 2017, 11:56 AM

He is well liked in the area and Western MA is the reddest part of the state. Yes people are angry and upset with him, but pretty much anyone who is a customer will overlook this as Dave being bamboozled by the Trump admin. His business may take a short-term hit, but he employs a large number of people in the area and he is one of few local suppliers of pet goods.

First, everything in America is now political. Football, movies, other sports, holidays, damn near everything.

I stopped buying at L.L. Bean because one of the owners donated to the asshole, moron.

So, let's look at Dave the Moron. He goes to the White House to take a picture with Trump the Moron. It becomes a national story. All the normal people (anti-Trump) now know Dave's either and asshole or a moron. They boycott his store.

Dave, in order to stem the criticism, apologizes for being "Duped". He goes for the moron explanation instead of the asshole explanation as his reasoning. Now, all the Trump people think he's a coward, asshole.

Dave's business will never recover.

Certainly not trailer park Trump voters.

His demographics are going to people who hate the Moron in Chief.

The typical Trump voter is white, male, over 50 years old.

Dave didn't get all that hate mail because he catered to the Trump crowd. And whether you think it's fair or not, I, and many like me, purchase with politics in mind.

having family up there a couple generations and as much as people point to "Boston", many of those towns in the rim (and even parts of working class Boston itself) and going around into the Cape, are about as red as you can get. There are some localities around Swingfield (that's what we used to call it) that might be reddish but nothing that compares to places near Worcester or Barnstable.

Apparently the ACA precluded small businesses from forming consortia in order to negotiate healthcare coverage costs down.

This is why healthcare should NOT be tied to employment.

As to Ratner, I feel a bit sorry for him - it was a lapse of judgment, but 42 years of hard work down the tubes? Boycott petitions? One of his employees says in the article they felt he really was trying to get something better for his employees. Because if you run a small business healthcare is a HUGE cost item. And ACA requires you to carry it when you have a certain number of employees. So, naturally he is trying to get his costs down.

Which is why healthcare should NOT be tied to employment.

Bad policy.

So was it a dumb move for Ratner to be in the same room with the orange underwear stain? Sure was. Was he naive? Yes. Does he deserve to go out of business because of it? I don't know.

I mean, Trump fucks up everything he touches. I mean everything. Puerto Ricans are still dying and he's talking about them paying back Wall Street and pulling FEMA. California is on fire, with no end in sight and Trump hasn't even acknowledged that. Tillerson says that the US will negotiate with North Korea 'until the first bomb falls,' and now we're in a pissing contest with Iran.

Trump just doesn't give a shit. He doesn't care about anyone but himself. He is profoundly ignorant. There just isn't anything good about this guy. He's a fucking sociopath. All you have to do is listen to him speak and you feel like you're wading through shit.

Does he deserve to go out of business because of it?

Throw in that thousands, or perhaps millions WILL DIE because of Trumps actions, so...yeah! Anyone who supports him deserves all the hell that can possibly be rained down on them.

He should consider himself lucky if all that happens is that he loses some business.

It's the same thing with people who call up customer service lines and scream, "YOU did X and Y to me!" Also, people who treat waitresses and food employees like garbage are in the same category of 'moran.' They love picking on people they know won't fight back. It's cowardice.

Looking at Google. there are multiple Dave's Soda and Pet City stores. There is zero chance of the owner being at any of them, so people should avoid being a dumbass by calling those stores to spew their rage. Nobody that works there cares or should be involved.

I was at a Chevron getting gas and saw someone berating the employee over the prices and accusing him of price fixing with the PetroCan across the street. I spoke up and said the employee had ZERO say in cost per litre fuel prices and to take it up with Chevron's HQ or contact whatever ministry would handle price fixing suspicions. He walked out in a huff.

I happen to know the employees there make minimum wage and I felt awful that the poor guy working was the target of such bullshit misplaced customer rage.

He only has his bad judgement to blame.

Every day Trump opens his mouth and lies, every day he makes another shitty 'policy' decision, the people who support him and associate him will be associated with his attitudes and behaviors. And rightly so.

That they don't understand why just proves their poor character judgement.
