Talking about Army Special Forces (aka Green Berets). That was their primary mission in Viet Nam for example and a huge part of what they do today. That is one reason why every Special Forces member has to master a foreign language. The Special Forces are aligned geographically, with each SP Group responsible for a specific region of the world.

It is common for training mission to involve patrolling with the troops you are training. First off, the trainees will not respect you if you are seen as not willing to go into danger with them. Secondly, it is the only way to see if your training is working.
