(6,145 posts)I had the honor of meeting him 20 years ago (!!???) when he paid a visit to my University Democrats group.
I won't gush about it but we were all deeply impressed and left wondering how Nixon could possibly have won. Now that I'm older and more cynical I've answered the question.

(37,573 posts)and now I have."
So he was "only" 58 when he was defeated in his 4th run for the Senate, and 50, my age now, when he ran for President.
At 37.52% he took a lower percentage of the vote than Barry Goldwater, although slightly better than Alf Landon at 36.54%. Sorta showed that many voters as well as the "establishment" would abandon the Democratic Party if our candidate was too far to the left.
McGovern was one of my Senators for most of my childhood. I remember stopping at his office when we visited DC in 1975, not that we met him. Nor did I ever see him at the SD State Fair, which was held in my hometown.
