Papa John's is blaming the NFL for hitting its bottom line.
The pizza company, an official sponsor of the league, sliced its sales and profit forecasts on Tuesday. And Papa John's founder and CEO John Schnatter wasn't shy about who he thinks is to blame: Commissioner Roger Goodell.
"Leadership starts at the top, and this is an example of poor leadership," Schnatter said on a conference call with investors Wednesday. "The NFL has hurt Papa John's shareholders."
NFL ratings, like the rest of network television, are in a slump. Through Week 7, NFL viewership is down 5% overall from the same point last year.

Seriously, people are dying on a near routine basis and Papa John, who has always been a massive jerk (Google his past statements on Obamacare) thinks we should be worried about sales figures? And by the way, his pizza is trash.

But y'all can't get my money if you close down the store.

(987 posts)night at a Halloween party. Pretty much lacking flavor. There are so many really good tasting pizzas available these days - both chain and indies. No excuse for anyone to buy the Papa John s***. But I wasn't hosting so I had no say in the matter.
Hopefully Papa John's lousy reputation is beginning to catch up with him.
FWIW - lots of pizza left over, not much of anything else. I took a couple of pieces home for Zeus Dog. Please, no one turn me in for animal abuse. He ate one piece and left the other. Keep in mind he is a Labrador retriever. They eat any and everything!

(12,640 posts)I'd rather have any of the three - heck, I'd rather have Chuck E Cheez's Pizza before I get Papa John's.
What really frosts me is there was a Pappa John's pizzeria in Seattle that was terrific - and they sponsored the boy's Soccer team my dad coached for my brother. The Pappa John Pirahnas. I mix the two up sometimes in my old age, hoping Pappa John's went national like Red Robin did.

(20,628 posts)our CEO did a video conference recently, and brought this very subject up!
He said that he was receiving e-mails that roughly ran 50/50 regarding feelings toward the protesting players, so he stated that there are no changes in the works regarding the current levels of sponsorship and promotion associated with the NFL.
Couldn't agree more regarding Papa John's - our business is NOT suffering, so maybe Pizza Boy needs to look at the product going out his door!

This is utterly preposterous. Leaves my mouth open. The ultimate in blame-shifting and scapegoating, AFAIC.
"Leadership starts at the top, and this is an example of poor leadership,"
And since when did Goodall become the "leader" of Papa John's?
I'm gonna need some time to pry my jaw up off the floor.

(42,585 posts)Papa John's quarterly results cover the period July1 through September 30.
So exactly one Sunday of football (and two midweek games) occurred after the controversy blew up.
Methinks Papa John's is trying to make excuses for a sales drop that probably started long before the football season.

(37,748 posts)I like their pizza (my admittedly simple palette doesn't often take cues from my bias), but the prices are much higher than the small shop around the corner I frequent-- bigger pizzas, more olives and pepperoni, and the Most Attractive Woman in the World as my usual delivery driver.

(12,265 posts)I haven't had one since Romney. He is also a big game hunter, into killing beautiful animals. Two reasons not to spend money there. I think those things have more to do with his drop in sales than the NFL. It is just a way for him to suck up to his right wing buddies.
